Booklet Description: 10 TULIPS and other flowering bulbs flourish in the flat, damp land near Leiden. Each spring they carpet the earth in an unforgettable mosaic of color. Flower bulbs are big business; Hollands exports $25 million worth of bulbs each year. The first tulip bulbs were brought to western Europe from Turkey in 1554. The world tulipa was derived from a Turkish word for turban. A gardener in Leiden propagated the bulbs on a large scale, anchoring the industry for Holland. Some two thousand varieties are grown here today.

Trains run to and fro and from Madurodam Central Station, jets tune their engines at the airport, boats float on canals, and carillons ring in the church towers. At night the street lights go on, the airfield beacon lights up, and the lighthouse sends out its beam.

Booklet Description: 14 SAILING DAY at Scheveningen's fishing village is an age-old event celebrating the spring departure of the luggers for the herring grounds. Everything is in shipshape--the herring casks scrubbed, luggers painted, and nets mended. Then with a gay flutter of flags, the fleet sails out into the North Sea. The village has remained apart from the fashionable beach area. Here the women still wear somber dresses befitting the wives and mothers of men risking their lives at sea.

It is a gay place with its vista of golden sands, big hotels, and multiple amusements. The Kurhaus Hotel, pictured here, contains the famed Kurhaus Concert Hall. The Holland Festival is held here for a month each summer, with two symphony orchestras, and the world's greatest artists and opera singers participating.
