Flower bulbs are big business; Hollands exports $25 million worth of bulbs each year. The first tulip bulbs were brought to western Europe from Turkey in 1554. The world tulipa was derived from a Turkish word for turban. A gardener in Leiden propagated the bulbs on a large scale, anchoring the industry for Holland. Some two thousand varieties are grown here today.
