Caption: THE FIRE IS OUT! CLEAN-UP AHEAD

Booklet Description: When the blaze is finally under control, the fireman's work is just half done. The tedious job of overhauling--seeing that every last ember is extinguished--comes next. At some fires, salvage crews work to save property by spreading tarps, channeling water and removing valuables. The fire over, the fireman will help salvage. The hose used at each fire is turned over to the hose tower where it will be properly dried. The engine company draws dry hose and returns to the station house, where, after a quick but thorough clean-up and equipment check, it will report itself "in service". After catching up on their sleep, the firemen can properly clean their equipment. The brass and enamel will gleam and the motor block will be as clean as if it were on exhibit at a motor show. But just as the diamond sparkle is buffed on the last nozzle, the alarm rings again. In a matter of minutes, the shining equipment will be dragged through mud, ashes, and smoke, for another fire fight is on!

Caption: FIGHTING THE FIRE

Booklet Description: The engine man is the real "smoke-eater". He jumps off the pumper or engine, cinches the hose coupling to the hydrant, then drags the hose and nozzle into the burning building to get at the heart of the flame. One whiff of mild woodsmoke is enough to discourage most of us, but the "smoke-eater" goes into black, eye-burning, lung-rasping smoke and mans the high pressure stream until he's ready to fall. Few engine men escape smoke poisoning, and many die of it. Yet smoke is just one of the dangers in his everyday work. There is the heat—his eyebrows are singed off, his hands and face are blistered, even the rubber seams of his boots melt, so close to the flames does he work. Open stair wells and water-filled cellars wait in the dark, smoke-filled rooms to trap him. Walls and ceilings fall to crush him. Even his weapon, the high pressure hose is a breaker of bones when it bucks out of control.

Booklet Description: At the fire, the truck crew has two urgent missions, lifesaving and ventilating. Saving those trapped on lower floors with ordinary ladders and life nets is dramatic enough, but a great blaze in a tall building will bring out a spectacular show of the fire fighter's talents. The great aerial ladder will reach up to save a trapped child. A ladder man who scrambles up the ladder even as it extends itself skyward carries the child down to safety. Another athletic fireman goes higher-up the side of a building with a scaling ladder to rig a lifeline for those on the roof. He may hoist a long ladder to bridge the gap between two buildings and carry across those too frightened to go alone. Meanwhile, men gain the roof and one starts a slow, methodical, top-to-bottom search of every room on every floor looking for casualties and panic-stricken people who foolishly hide in closets to suffocate. Another fireman begins the "venting". A fire builds up a tremendous pressure of smoke and gases that can cause a wall to buckle and fall, or the whole building to explode. Working against time, the roof men will feel out the hot spots and with hooks and fire axes slash a hole in the roof. Through this opening, the smoke and flames billow upwards, relieving the pressure and clearing the air for the engine men below. Outside, the turret of the pumper or hose cart joins the battle. Fed by from four to eight hoses, its powerful stream reaches high, breaking in windows for ventilation, wetting down hot walls, and directly combatting the fire as high as four stories up by bouncing water off the ceilings through the windows.

Caption: PUMPER AND HOOK & LADDER MOVE OUT!

Booklet Description: As the equipment rolls out the door, the driver knows the location of the fire alarm box from its code number. He knows the quickest route to it, what other equipment is headed for the fire, and just what streets they will be traveling. Sirens wailing, the truck and engine speed through the streets, the traffic pulling over to the curb ahead of them. The 58-foot hook and ladder truck threads its way like a taxicab. The two men who steer it show what teamwork and practice can do. At every corner the rear wheelman must turn right when the driver turns left, then swing sharply left so that the rear of the truck can follow the tracks of the front. As they approach the box, only three or four minutes after its glass was broken, the firemen watch for smoke. They wonder if it's to be just a matter of hooking up a fog nozzle to smother a fire smouldering in the upholstery of a hotel davenport, or a real "worker" demanding all their skill and courage. Firemen do not glory in big fires; they brag about the little fires that died little. Firemen and fire equipment alike are trained to move fast for speed is the most important factor in firefighting. Explosions excluded, every fire starts with a flame that can be doused with a bucket of water. Neglected too long, that same flame can grow into a conflagration that will destroy an entire city.

Caption: THE ALARM! MAN THE ENGINE!

Booklet Description: The little red box on the corner telephone pole is the fireman's master. Although many fires are called in by telephone, the fastest way to get fire equipment to the scene is to break the glass of the fire alarm box and activate it. Immediately, the box's code number is tapped out and recorded in every station house in the city, and the alarm is sounded on the fire-bell at the "first due" companies. The fireman is always ready for the alarm. Wherever he is, whatever he is doing, that brazen clanging starts him for his truck or engine on the double. At night he has his trousers and boots carefully arranged so that at the sound of the bell he can jump out of bed and into most of his clothes in one motion. Grabbing the brass pole, he plummets to the ground floor, leaps on his truck, jams on his helmet and squirms into his fire coat as the doors open and the equipment starts to move out. "Second due" companies are alerted. They roll if the fire officer in charge at the fire calls a second alarm. Other companies may move into the vacant station houses to give temporary protection against a second fire.

Caption: A PRACTICE JUMP INTO THE LIFE NET

Booklet Description: Stepping out into space two stories up takes courage and confidence in your fellow man. You hope they will maneuver the life net under you, and that you will land on your "sitter" to keep from getting hurt. Each rookie must pass this test before he can enroll for training, and all firemen train both in jumping and in manning the net. The life net is carried by the hook and ladder in a special compartment under the ladders. It is 10 feet in diameter and, held by 10 or more husky firemen, can safely catch a man jumping from as high as four stories. A successful eight-story jump is recorded. The jumper ripped right through the net but his fall was broken enough to enable him to survive.

Caption: AERIAL LADDER DRILL

Booklet Description: Let's go down to the firehouse and visit the firemen. The fire truck is stretching its aerial ladder to the fourth story of the training tower. Rookies and veterans alike train on the ladder which can extend 100 feet in any direction, swiveled and elevated by powerful hydraulic motors. As a rookie, the fireman must prove he is not afraid of heights by climbing the aerial ladder and coming down again. Later he will learn to carry a hose to its top to combat a skyscraper fire, and carry a fire victim down to safety. He will learn to clamber up the side of a building like a human fly by using scaling ladders. He will learn knots for rigging lifelines, the use of high pressure nozzles, ways to break into locked buildings, how to search smoke-filled rooms, and a hundred squad drills that will enable his company to save precious seconds in getting water to the fire. As a full-fledged "smoke-eater", he will risk his life at every fire that is a real "worker". No one will think anything of it because he will stand shoulder to shoulder with other heroes who are paid to fight fires, but who are courageous and self-sacrificing beyond the call of their duties.

Unrestrained, it burns our homes, blackens our forests and level our cities. Each year in the United States, it destroys $700,000,000 worth of property and kills 11,000 of us. Freaks of nature such as lightning and volcanoes cause many fires. An earthquake in 1906 started the $500,000,000 San Francisco fire, the biggest fire in U. S. history. Most fires can be traced to man, himself. In 1871, carelessness started the famous Chicago fire that left 100,000 homeless. In 1903, an overheated spotlight fired the Iroquois Theater in that same city, killing 600. In 1944, a pyromaniac set fire to a circus tent in Hartford, Connecticut, snuffing out 164 lives. In 1947, two shiploads of ammonium nitrate exploded at Texas City with 3,000 killed or wounded. Your community is protected from catastrophes like these by the foresightedness, skill and bravery of your firemen.

Huck tore the tops off all the seed packages and stepped into the seed bed to start planting. He forgot the hoe which he had left blade up!

"None will dare call this bear, a square," Yogi chuckled as he cut away. "Now for the lettering. I didn't have the heart to ask Angelo to do it." The great moment arrived. Before a vast and noisy audience, Yogi announced that his face and features had been immortalized by the world's greatest artist—in another line of endeavor, of course.
