YEEEEES i did!!! (thanks again youve saved my life) :D i am glad i finally watched it, now i actually understand certain fandom things ive seen people talk about!!! (example, i was so haunted by "tardy marty" LMBO i didnt know where it came from or why ppl were saying it ;w;)
MY THOUGHTS ON IT: i did enjoy it buuut i also kind of have mixed opinions too. ofc, i already love the movie so i was kinda guaranteed to like the play, but at the same time i recognize i have childhood nostalgia/movie attachment bias so i was trying to divorce that from my viewing too ^^;
PUTTING THAT ASIDE however, i think a lot of the songs were. ookaaay. >_> like dgmw there WERE a few that i thought were absolute bangers, and then there were a handful of others where, even tho i wasnt wowed by the song as a whole necessarily, certain segments or lines i was like "okay that ate". perhaps the biggest qualm i had was (and i recognize this is per production so take that as u will) i think the choreo was... a bit boring sorry T_T and it sucks too bc the sets were SO FREAKING GOOD???? possibly my favorite part of the whole production tbh, every single transition i was like :D imo "something about that boy" was the only sequence i thought really utilized the stage and movement to its fullest potential during the song. everything else felt like a lot of sitting and standing, and then occasionally some bg dancers which were good but not particularly noteworthy (since theyre meant to be in the bg ofc).
NOW. COUNTERPOINT. i listened to the soundtrack on its own afterwards and tbh i think they have potential for some really good animatic material. like with the right choreo and action happening throughout, i think i would have found them a lot more engaging. so credit where credit is due there. like i genuinely have some ideas i wanna do bc it gave me a lot of inspo, which is a slay but also kind of a bummer that the show itself didnt always wow me yknow?
BUT ANYWAY like i said overall i did enjoy it a lot and am very glad i saw it!!! ofc adaptations are gonna be difficult, and its on STAGE so i totally understand why certain plot elements were altered as well. so all things considered/with all that against them, they did a great job; i think it was super fun and would recommend it for sure :)
