In a trade of the Babes in Pennsylvania, the Phillies send first baseman Babe Dahlgren to the Pirates for catcher Babe Phelps and cash. Dahlgren will be best remembered for being the player who replaced Lou Gehrig after the 'Iron Horse' had played in a major-league record 2,130 consecutive games.

But one of my favorite challenge trades in baseball history happened on [December 30] in 1943. The Pirates traded Babe Phelps, a catcher, to the Phillies for Babe Dahlgren, a first baseman. Only one of the Babes stood up to scrutiny, with Dahlgren driving in 101 runs in 1944 and finishing 12th in the MVP voting. Phelps never played in the major leagues again. You've seen one Babe, you've seen them all? Hardly.

Film footage from the Games 1 and 2 of the 1939 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in living, vibrant color complete with stirring soundtrack. Yankees pitcher Monte Pearson took a no-hitter into the 8th inning. He eventually gave up two hits but completed the shutout for a 4-0 victory.
