My 2018 MLB Hall of Fame Ballot
Barry Bonds Roger Clemens Vladimir Guerrero Trevor Hoffman Chipper Jones Andruw Jones Fred McGriff Mike Mussina Jim Thome Omar Vizquel
I left Curt Schilling and Edgar Martinez off my ballot to make room for Andruw and Omar. I would vote for them if I could vote for more than ten candidates.
Jeff Kent and Larry Walker deserve more love from me.
Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa probably deserve better too.
I really wanted to vote for Jamie Moyer.
Not so much for Johan Santana.
Gary Sheffield is a hard no.
Hey Manfred...
Take your DH and $^)&# it!

A trailer by Lim Possible Films Starring Ferrous Bueller Lifts Off - AJ and Guilmer Mama's Boys - Adam and Noah Tiny but Tough - Cathy and Kim Thrust Busters - Brenda and Ivanna The Shaka - Shannon and Michel
A fun time was had by all at Noobfest 2016! CrossFit Synapse dominated the best costume category and placed on the podium in both the womens and mens divisions!
Congratulations to Silver Medalists - Brenda, Ivanna and my fantastic partner Shannon in his competition debut! Big props to the Mama’s Boys, Noah and brother Adam, and Ferrous Bueller Lifts Off, AJ and Guilmer, for their costume awards, and also to Kim, who set a new PR at 95-lbs for her three-rep overhead squat set!
Thank you to everyone at Code 3 Athletics for ably hosting such a fun event, and congratulations to all the fellow competitors, who all set a high bar for performance and fortitude!
One of the highlights for me was to also watch John Bosma in action behind his lens. I hope to learn more soon!
I had access to a full-frame Nikon D800 for the event, and I decided to shoot some video in between shooting stills. I didn't plan to put together this clip, but it was quick and easy to do with an iMovie template (score one point for Apple). It will be hard to go back to DX format (cropped frame), and I think I want to shoot video more often now.
Special thanks John Bosma Fine Arts Photography for his amazing photos!
#tbt #highsocks and #shortshorts baby! My parents dug this photo out of their scrapbooks for me. I believe it was taken in 7th or 8th grade at St. Mary's School. It is probably the only photo ever taken of me playing organized #basketball. Notice the skilled touch with the left (non-dominant) hand. #madhops #hoops #throwbackthursday I'm not sure how I got away with such long hair at a parochial school. #rebel Not really. I was a saint ;)
My 2016 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot:
Bagwell, Bonds, Clemens, Edmonds, Griffey, Hoffman, Mussina, Piazza, Schilling, Trammell
If I could vote for more than ten I would also definitely vote for Fred McGriff and Lee Smith, and I could probably be talked into voting for Jeff Kent, Edgar Martinez, Billy Wagner and Larry Walker.

My Mets Franchise Four
Seaver His nickname is “The Franchise.” He should have been named ahead of Sandy Koufax to the four Greatest Living Players.
Wright All-time Mets leader in WAR, hits, runs, RBI, total bases, doubles, extra-base hits, walks, at-bats, and plate appearances (amongst others). Assuming he is able to return from his back injury, he should eventually pass Darryl Strawberry to become the Mets all-time home run leader as well.
Gooden I picked him ahead of Piazza for several reasons. Tenure - Gooden played eleven seasons as a Met. Piazza played eight. Hardware - Gooden won Rookie of the Year and a Cy Young Award as a Met. Piazza showed as high as third once in the MVP voting during his tenure as a Met. He did win four Silver Slugger awards. Championships - Gooden’s Mets won the 1986 World Series. Piazza’s Mets were blown out by the Yankees in the 2000 World Series.
Keith Hernandez was voted to the MLB list and I’ll allow that he does merit consideration. During his tenure as a Met, Hernandez won a World Championship (1986), he won five Gold Glove awards, he was named to three All-Star teams, he placed second in the 19846 MVP voting and he finished fourth in the 1986 MVP voting.
He didn’t get my vote though.
My vote went to Ed Kranepool.
You might say, “Ed Kranepool?!? He was named to just one All-Star team. He never appeared in any MVP voting and likely never received a single MVP vote. Why Ed Kranepol???”
Ed Kranepool played his entire eighteen year career (EIGHTEEN YEARS!) in a Mets uniform. He wore no other major league uniform. He signed with the Mets as an amateur free agent on June 27, 1962. After 41 games in the minors, he made his MLB debut on September 22, 1962 as a pinch hitter for Gil Hodges at the tender age of seventeen. Kranepool made his first start the next day and collected his first hit, a double, off reliever Don Elston in the Mets 2-1 win over the Cubs. Eighteen seasons later, Kranepool retired as the all-time Mets leader in hits, singles, doubles, at-bats, and plate appearances. He has since been passed by Wright in all of those categories, though Kranepool still has a comfortable over Wright in games played with 1853 to Wright’s 1516.
If Tom Seaver is The Franchise, then Ed Kranepool is Mr. Met.

No no-no tonight for Brett Anderson. One pitch. One hit by Ender Inciarte. And, Yasiel just ended Hellickson's bid with one out in the bottom of the first. #dodgers #dbacks #firstpitch #baseballisbetter
For everything there is a first time. Taking the train (the TRAIN!) to watch the @dodgers with my father and brother. #spocklogic #baseballisbetter
First #battingpractice of the spring! Unfortunately, my timing was terrible. I was ahead of everything; hitting pitches off the end of the bat and fouling off others. The good news is that my hands are still quick. On the very last pitch I finally squared one up and lined it up the middle. #WalkOff! I’ll be back at the cages tomorrow! One reason I do #crossfit is so that I can keep playing #baseball until I can no longer put on a uniform. #baseballisbetter #baseballislife #fasthands #switchhitters #springbreak #demarini #75MPHisslow
Memory Lane
Astros reliever Pat Neshek was a little bored yesterday and decided to take a trip down memory lane.
Bored so I looked up 2001 Cape Cod league rosters to see how many guys are still playing today...Counted 11 out of roughly 250 @BradZiegler

As luck would have it, my wife and I were in Cape Cod for our honeymoon back in 2001. While we were there we attended three games (further proof that I married the right girl) - Orleans Cardinals at Hyannis Mets, Brewster Whitecaps at Falmouth Commodores, and Harwich Mariners at Hyannis Mets. I took these photos with my old Sony DSCP51 CyberShot. Click on the photos for a larger view of each (though not much larger as it was only a 2MP digital camera).

My Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot, 2015 Edition
One thing is certain when the results of the Cooperstown Class of 2015 voting are announced later today - once again, no one will be unanimously elected. While some BBWAA voters may still cling to asinine personal guidelines such as no first-year candidate should ever be elected, I cannot fault one of the thought processes several voters have offered this year.
Rules limit voting to a maximum of ten candidates on a ballot. However, many voters feel that there are many more than ten players worthy of enshrinement on this year's ballot. So, some BBWAA members are casting votes for borderline candidates who they feel are worthy, and relying on their fellow electors to enshrine the slam-dunk candidates. There is an obvious danger in that line of thinking, in that if too many writers vote that way, the seemingly no-brainer candidates may not be elected either.
With that in mind, here is who I would select on my ballot (if I had one).
Jeff Bagwell
Craig Biggio
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Randy Johnson
Pedro Martinez
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Curt Schilling
Alan Trammell
Do I think that John Smoltz belongs in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely! Why is he not listed on my ballot then? For two reasons. First, because I've finally been convinced that the woefully under-appreciated Alan Trammell deserves to be enshrined in Cooperstown. This is Trammell's fourteenth year on the ballot. If he is not elected this year, he will have just one year of eligibility remaining before he falls off the ballot and must wait fifteen years(!) for consideration by the Veterans Committee. Secondly, I picked Mussina and Schilling ahead of Smoltz because I feel their respective bodies of work are a bit stronger than that of Smoltz.
I've said that I would have voted for Fred McGriff and Lee Smith in previous ballots. This year I just don't have room for them, and one or either of both of them may not receive enough votes to remain on next year's ballot.
I've flip-flopped on Tim Raines on past ballots. On the 2013 ballot, I said yes. Last year, I said no, partly because my ballot was full. Mostly though I felt that Kenny Lofton was every bit as good as Raines, yet the BBWAA failed to name Lofton on at least five percent of its ballots. That was certainly no fault of Raines, so I shouldn't hold the BBWAA's voting against him. However, I don't have room for him again on this year's ballot.
I not convinced on Carlos Delgado, Jeff Kent and Larry Walker. I think they merit further consideration though, and I hope they remain on next year's ballot.
I'm not convinced on Gary Sheffield either. I always though of him more as a Hall of Fame pr*ck with jaw dropping bat speed than a Hall of Famer. His number merit strong consideration though. Though he's not getting my vote this year, he deserves to remain on next year's ballot.
I've said no with regard to Mark McGwire's case in the past, not because of any involvement with steroids or other performance enhancing drugs. However, if I had room on my ballot, I'm leaning back toward yes again. Why? Because when I think of Big Mac, phrases such as "most feared hitter of his era” and "most prolific home run hitter of his era” come to mind. I’m reminded that McGwire is "second to only Babe Ruth in career home run frequency.” Those are Hall of Fame caliber intangibles in my book. Again though, no room on this year's ballot. I hope to see McGwire still on next year's ballot.
I'm not entirely convinced that Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro are not a Hall of Famers too. Steroids happened. Raffy and Sammy happened. The Hall is a museum. Get off your high horse.
What about Don Mattingly, you ask? This is his final year of eligibility for election by the BBWAA. I think Mattingly the player still falls a bit short of enshrinement in Cooperstown. Hopefully his career arc will be similar to that of Joe Torre, and Mattingly the player and manager will ultimately be elected.
I loved to watch Edgar Martinez hit. He’s in the Hall of Very Very VERY Good for me though.
Nomar? Sorry, no. Hall of Fame Saturday Night Live sketch though.
Troy Percival? 17.2 bWAR seems low for four-time All-Star with 358 saves with 146 ERA+, 1.108 WHIP and 9.9K/9. Angels Hall of Famer, definitely.
