Babylon 5: The Road Home

I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the new animated movie Babylon 5: The Road Home since some of the short film continuations weren’t exactly the most memorable to me. Animation — and the ability to find new voice actors to replace members of the cast who’ve died — seems to have really done wonders for J. Michael Straczynski’s storytelling options.

Yeah, I loved it. It was by turns funny, heartbreaking and thrilling. I hope JMS gets to make more animated films. I also hope he gets a chance to relaunch the series on The CW or anywhere that will have him.

I love that the first five minutes gave us a callback to the shuttle conversation in “Babylon Squared.”

Am I gonna be confused if I haven't seen Babylons 1-4?

Star trek is this optimistic look at the future, which recognizes that a lot of things that are ugly about humanity aren't just going to magically go away.

Babylon five is a series about how we will keep "advancing" as a species, but the fundamental ugliness of humanity is inescapable. We meet alien cultures, hundreds of them, of all kinds and body types, and racism grows to meet the demand. A million opportunities to better mankind, but it would require trusting an alien race, so we just don't do it. Our species grows to spread throughout the galaxy, and we still spend all of our focus on oppressing our fellow man, no matter the circumstances. Psychics become common among humans, an amazing expansion of the human condition, and we oppress them so hard they turn around and try to wipe out the entire nonpsychic portion of the human race or failing that, will accept complete subjugation of the species. It's ugly. Every inch of the world of Babylon 5 is an extrapolation of today, with the assumption that we would never seriously try to better ourselves (kind of fair).

Commander Sheridan Sinclair also loved Tennyson (ugh) like Ashley Williams.

I finally started watching Twin Peaks

Just finished the third episode. I don't quite know what to make of it, except I'm pretty sure I really like it. I think.

Also, holy shit I new J. Michael Straczynski was a big fan but I never knew how much it influenced Babylon 5 - I'm thinking of the dream sequences specifically.
