Just, so many kiddos.
surf’s up!
Beryl studies her face in the bathroom mirror. The worry lines that crease her brow, the laughter lines that trace their way down from her nose to her mouth. They weren’t there twenty years ago, before Azzie and Bernard and Blackberry. She wonders if the grey that flecks her dark brown hair is unusual for a babusagi just barely pushing forty. It’s from her kids, this she knows, a babusagi can live forever in a body that looks twenty. But the science magazine which she picked up that morning had an article about the life essence stored in floating boba. How when the gacha grants a couple kids, the parents give a little bit of their lifespan to their children. At least, that’s what the experts say.
But Beryl isn’t sure how much stock she puts in these so called experts. College or no college she bets that she knows a lot more about the gacha and child rearing than those guys. And Beryl knows exactly where each of her wrinkles come from. Worry over Blackberry and her willful nature, concern for her youngest son Daimeon, even old fears over whether she would make a good mother or not. Hours spent pouring over her children’s homework- Bernard’s always so meticulous, Kuma’s smudged where he fell asleep on the page. Squinting in the low evening light at Kimani’s art, marathoning Disney with Tesla when they both ought to be in bed. Cuddling Andromeda under a meteor shower. Dancing with Tig, letting her smiles come more and more naturally around her best friend, her wife. Watching the family they made grow and grow and grow with no signs of stopping.
Beryl enjoys science, she enjoys learning. But her wrinkles tell a story of love, not chemicals, and she wears her age gracefully.
