When dad gets the kids on Halloween night.
Does anyone have any tips for calming down a crying baby?
I volunteer at my church's daycare every few Sundays, but I'm also relatively new with the age group. I work with ages 4 months to 18 months and yesterday this poor 9 month old boy wouldn't stop crying (he missed his mom) until dismissal. (Roughly two hours)
The other women and I took turns carrying him and trying to calm him down, but nothing worked until our supervisor had to take him outside for a bit. He didn't calm down then, and so they had to call his mom.
I feel so bad because a lot of the kids cry on arrival, but sometimes you can calm them down real quick by distracting them, but does anyone have any advice for a kid that won't stop crying?
For parents of 5-13 y/o
When I was nannying three boys (at the time, 8,9, and 11) we would have a system called “bad tomorrow”.
“Bad tomorrow” was used for when we were out in public, or it was too late in the night for a formal punishment.
For example: the 8 year old and 11 year old are teaming up against the 9 year old in a restaurant. They are arguing and its starting to get out of hand— issue the “bad tomorrow” warning, making sure each of them heard you clearly, and hope it worked. Depending on age, decide how many warnings they get. These boys got two, because they are intelligent enough to understand that actions have consequences. If they are still fighting, and especially if one child hurts another to make them cry, that’s when you give the strict “bad tomorrow”.
The purpose of it is to protect the kids (and yourself, really) from the public embarrassment of punishment. No one likes the guardian yelling at their child, especially not the guardian or child. So, while still protecting the childs feelings and any possible scrutiny, you get across the message that you were serious, and you will follow through with a punishment.
Then, tomorrow, they get a “bad” day. No electronics. More time outside (with these boys, that often managed how rough they were with one another). More time reading, doing school work, and time one on one. Maybe throw in your own punishment. These kids, they loved their kindles more than life itself, so the threat of having a “bad tomorrow” without them, or any electronics, was usually enough to earn apologies. And sometimes I would have to follow through, but they learned.
In another case, it could be the children being too rowdy late at night, or doing some kind of act that would earn a punishment. Say it’s bedtime and they are being a big brat. Its too late to take away electronics— they’re already away! Instead, they get a “bad morning” or “bad afternoon” warning. This late at night, children are tired and likely to make stupid mistakes they wouldn’t have meant if they were rested. So, you split the punishment. It shows the action was still wrong, but you can understand that they felt off and it was just a bad moment in time.
Okay, hope my “bad tomorrow” advice helped. Best of luck to you incredible parents/guardians/nannys/babysitters/anyone who has to take care of children at that weird stage of life. You got this.
I just put the kids to bed and it was way too easy and it’s way too quiet this has never happened before what’s going on these kids are angels

So I’m babysitting and the little girl told her mom to have fun and the mom said ‘oh I will!’ Wtf am I reading too much into this?!? What’s happening?!?
PSA for any students needing hours
So I planned for and finished painting kids' faces today to get a couple community hours since I'm a bit behind, and this morning I wasn't really looking forward to sitting painting when I'm not really an artist. The thing is, when I got there I saw kids in little lederhosen and plaid dresses and got a little pumped. Not much to do at first, since I really had no idea what I was doing, and when the kids swarmed, I started using the sort of tone I have when babysitting or helping my mom at her preschool. Given that most of these kids were between the ages 2 and 7, I had a range of struggles. Most of them looked down a little too much, and the girls' hair would get paint in it. A few kids would move away from the brush every time I put it on their face, or keep moving to see the puppet show in the back. Luckily, I had lots of tricks up my sleeves, like talking about anything that would keep a six-year-old's attention, acknowledging where it may "tickle", or just gently using a finger under the chin to guide their faces forward again. Now I may be an exception in our current teenage "society," but I absolutely love kids and seeing them happily in awe by the fact that they look like a bright pink cat. They also didn't really care about overall quality, because they were there seeing how much time it took for me. Long story...well, long, I guess, doing one task or craft for kids during a festival is a great way to get hours if you enjoy being around them for a bit. They come and go and even if you aren't fond of kids, you really just have to focus on making cute designs and they'll be gone before you know it. Although, a little kindness and patience goes a long way. The group organizer came up to me as I prepped to leave and said a mom had told her that she was impressed with my patience with her little two year old and four year old. That really meant a lot to me, and it's actually made me want to teach after school. Long story short...kids are a blessing, make sure you help keep it that way.
