#play for today #back of beyond #single play #1974 #bbc #julia jones #desmond davis #rachel roberts #lynne jones #michael griffiths #edward hardwicke #diana bishop #while I'm extremely grateful to the bfi for the work they've done in properly restoring and making available long unseen PfTs it must be #said that the decision to go blu ray only as format can be puzzling; so many of the plays‚ altho shot on film‚ used cheap stock that #doesn't really afford high definition remastering‚ plus many exist in second generation copies where masters aren't available #all of which is to say: I've not noticed much to suggest there new sets couldn’t have been dvd releases without much difference in picture #quality. but then this; Back of Beyond is the first play I've watched on the bfi sets that has truly benefitted from the upscale in media.#it's absolutely beautiful‚ pin sharp and could almost have been filmed in the last 10 years. the pictures above in no way do justice to #what a truly beautiful play this is‚ helped no end by being entirely shot on location in the Brecon Beacons #Rachel Roberts‚ already a double BAFTA winner and oscar nominee‚ was quite the get for the PfT team; she plays Olwen‚ a lonely widow #who lives isolated in the welsh hills and strikes up an unlikely friendship with the local paper girl (Lynne Jones‚ whose performance is #quite incredible and threatens to outshine the very talented cast around her). a study of loneliness and of cause and effect within #relationships‚ but also something of a coming of age story for the young Rachel. julia jones was one of the comparatively few women writing #for the tv drama anthologies in the 1970s‚ and her play is a deceptively simple piece with a small cast which nevertheless carries a bit #emotional impact; gently devastating‚ with the final ten minutes (of 60; short for a PfT) among the most affecting and heartfelt #the series ever produced. a masterclass in short form drama for the small screen. i feel like this one is going to hang over me for a while
