part two:: you're that guy right::
-> before you moved, high school year 1
Voices of his juniors ring out in the gym—but Oikawa couldn’t register the names attached to the sounds. He stares, blankly at the spot where Iwaizumi had just spiked, how it seemed to shift with the bright overhead lights of the gym.
“Hey, you okay?” Iwaizumi asks, snapping Oikawa out of his small trance.
“Huh?” he stutters, being brought back to reality. His eyes snap towards you—for a brief second—before looking at Iwaizumi.
“You’re not focused today, Oikawa,” he states, simply. “That set just now—not your usual style.”
Well, he was right, Oikawa grumbled in his head. The set was very very sloppy for his standards, and he was surprised that Iwaizumi had managed a good hit out of that. I mean, it was Iwaizumi. He could manage a lot himself.
However, the reason Oikawa simply wasn’t focused was a lot more embarrassing than he would like to admit. He spares another glance at you, sitting on the bench, your notebook in hand, pretending to take notes as you stare into the space between the court lines on the gym floor.
As he goes into his ready position, waiting for whoever was serving to do their thing, he begins to wonder why you were distracted. Your distraction made him distracted. His distraction made the whole team distracted. You were basically the catalyst of everything that Oikawa did, for now.
He watches your eyes lazily follow the ball as it soars in the air, and the play begins.
“Oikawa! What was up with you today?” Hanamaki jokes as he slaps him on the back, water bottle sloshing in hand.
“Yeah, you were totally off your game this practice. Any reason why?” Matsuhana adds, appearing right beside Hanamaki like conjoined twins.
Oikawa chuckles as he tries to direct their attention away from his unusually bad performance that day. But before he could open his mouth to defend himself, Iwa already hammered the last nail in the coffin.
“Because he couldn’t stop staring at (name) the entire time. That’s why.” Iwaizumi throws in there, rolling his eyes.
And the two devils perk up their ears as Oikawa groans.
“Oh? What’s this we’re hearing?” Matsukawa devilishly smiles.
“Our great captain of Seijoh, ikemen number one, has a crush…?” Hanamaki sneers.
He pushes them both off, flinging his towel to ward them away. “Quit it! I was just off my game today! Happens to everyone!” Oikawa defensively yells.
“Reeaaallly? Then care to explain why Hajime-kun over here says you’ve been staring at our new manager?”
They all turn their heads to Iwaizumi, who just shrugs. “I simply made an observation.”
“Iwa-chan! You can’t just say that!” Oikawa groans as Hanamaki and Matsukawa laugh their asses off in the background.
But amidst the teasing, Oikawa finds himself genuinely worried about you. It wasn’t often you would be so… down during practice. One thing that he admired the most about you was how hard you worked as a manager, how determined you were to learn everything even in your third and last year, helping out his team the best you could.
So it made sense for him to worry, right?
Later, when everyone else had begun folding the nets and dragging the poles back into the storage room, Oikawa approached you, faux confidence barely keeping up with his real nervousness.
“(name)-chan,” he says, stopping right in front of you.
You looked up, and after realizing it was Oikawa, forced on a tiny smile. “Oikawa-kun. What’s up?” you nodded.
He gulped, feeling his adam apple bob in his throat. He wasn’t used to comforting people, or even interrogating them in the first place. He had no idea how to go about this.
You look at him for a second, a blank expression on your face. Oikawa grimaces.
“What?”
“I–I mean… I just thought you looked a little down today—Uhh..” Oikawa trailed off, completely unlike his cocky and teasing personality. You watch in wonder as the Oikawa Tooru, king of the school, stammer and trip on his words trying to comfort you.
And it was funny as hell.
You break out in fits of laughter, clutching your stomach as Oikawa and the rest of the team gape. Did I do something wrong? Am I getting made fun of?
But no, he could hear the strains in your laugh, how some of the biggest exhales were just a teensy bit forced.
He would know. He’s been hearing your real laugh in his dreams ever since he saw you that day. “(name)-chan..?”
You smile widely, cheeks stretching, as you wipe a tiny tear from your eye. “Yes, Oikawa-kun. Thank you for checking up on me, but I assure you I am completely fine.”
And with that, you stood up and packed up your things as rapidly as Oikawa had ever seen and exited the gym.
But right before you pushed open the door, you turned to Oikawa, all the amusement from what seemed like “a giant fit of laughter” gone.
“You’re the kid from next door, right?” you whisper, at a volume only Oikawa could hear.
He silently nods, still speechless.
This time, for a split second, a real smile sparkles on your face.
And then the metal door creaked open, dragging you into the night outside.
