Nobody looks up at the night sky anymore. Everybody is too overworked, too tired after a day’s work of school or jobs.

It’s the astronomers that notice first. Then, it’s the farmers. The navigators. The others don’t realize the problem until their children go outside, star charts from science class in hand, and ask, “Mom? Dad?

“Why aren’t the stars where they’re supposed to be?”

She can no longer tell if it is part of the game or not, really. The little confessions, tinged with truth; a secret for a secret, a lie for a lie, a wish for a wish.

She was too well-behaved for that, and she didn’t learn how until she started her work. But I would sneak out at night, and I would teach myself of all the workings of the court, what was important and what wasn’t. I never stopped. I wanted to be better.”
