Storytime: I'm sitting at a bar in the airport when the woman next to me starts to casually speak. We talk about a myriad of things, which I was cool with until she got comfortable. The comment made me feel some type of way and initiated this post. She made a comment about black women. Her statement was offensive. My intent for this post is to inform and tell non-WOC that it's not okay to say these things to anyone much less a black woman. __ Her: I was telling my brother, the only man in our family that dates black women, how beautiful the black women are here (DMV). Me: Oh Yeah (Thinking she does realize that I am a black woman) Her: I was surprised to see so many beautiful black women. Me: Face scrunches up __ Do you see how this is offensive? She gave a backhanded compliment. I quickly stopped talking to her and continued to drink my wine. I'm certain my facial expression said it all. We must do better. I know we believe in freedom of speech, but there is a fine line between speaking your mind and being rude. She's lucky I was in an amazing mood and didn't have time for her antics. #somethingsabouther #lessonlearned #blackwomenarebeautiful #backhandedcompliment #notokay #blackqueen👑 #blackgirlmagic✨ #meditatewithme (at Regan Intl Airport - DCA) https://www.instagram.com/somethingsabouther/p/BvcckvQlncV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lxq0veulm3pk
