25/21 Plot Huhs?
I finished Twenty Five Twenty One... and I just have to say, I truly and genuinely love every single thing about this show except for how it ended. And I am very amazed to see such heated discussions about this on tumblr. I literally inhaled every single episode like the air i needed to breathe. I have done nothing for the past two days but watch this show. So I wondered why, as the last episode ended... I felt so underwhelmed. Lost? I was confused... why things ended the way they did. I didn’t like that it gave me a Rory in Gilmore Girls “A Year in the Life” vibe. Where despite all her hard work, she seemed adrift and unhappy.
First off... Hee-Do was married?? To whom? They couldn’t at least show us? 😭 Who on earth could have held a flame to her love for Yi-Jin? It didn’t make sense to me... how Yu-Rim & Ji-Woong could make their relationship (literally between two countries too!) work but Hee-Do and Yi-Jin couldn’t...?
And what the heck was with Yi-Jin in New York?? He literally didn’t have to apply to a job in a place that he consistently compared to hell on earth 😭 this poor boy goes through the unimaginable trauma of witnessing the aftermath of a terrorist attack and decides to stay in that place, by himself, with no support system... for WHAT? It’s not like he didn’t have a perfectly fine job where he was? And he could barely handle the tragedies he reported on on a local scale... why would he sign up to go over there? And they already had correspondents in the US too so it’s like? What? 😭
Also... how the hell did he fly to NY? Planes weren’t even allowed to come in to the country when that happened. There are literally broadway musicals based on this fact 😭 (”Come From Away”) He said he walked across the border? But huh...? From Korea or what? New Jersey? Idk but they didn’t have to make it that drastic to where he was literally in New York. It was such an uncharacteristic decision for him to make.
People have brought up many points about how as the audience we feel slighted by them setting up these foreshadowed moments that Hee-do and Yi-Jin are gonna end up together but then it’s all thrown away at the end. I have to high key agree there too. A moment that really stuck with me, as I’m sure it did to everyone, was when Hee-do tells him she can’t lose this relationship with him (the scene before he kisses her in the snow) no matter what. That was like the core of what we have been watching and rooting for in this entire show. Hee-do doesn’t give up on ANYONE or ANYTHING. Especially- ESPECIALLY when people tell her she should. There’s just no way she would have given up on Yi-Jin, and he wouldn’t have taken a job in freaking New York out of effing no-where. Sorry but that just doesn’t compute with his character in the least!!!
Anyway... what are your thoughts. I’m sure I’ll have more to share but rn my tired binge friend brain can only say this lol.
