One interesting thing about the CMW other than there aren’t any trails and that it’s virgin forest is that it is an area of compass unreliability due to the iron deposits in the rocks. In certain places our compasses would just spin wildly. This was at a time when a GPS was the size of a brick and cost over $3 K.
The terrain contour was fairly subtle in places making land navigation difficult under ideal conditions
At times we were lost, gloriously and fantastically lost and we couldn’t have been anymore overjoyed
