Difference Makers at Marquette University: The Backpack Program
BackPack program begins at Trego School
BackPack program begins at Trego School
What is a BackPack program? In essence, students are sent home with a “backpack” of food for the weekend. The premise is that while students receive meals at school (indeed, meals are free to all students at Trego School), they may need some supplementation on weekends and holidays. Thus, a BackPack program. Students are given a pack of food for the weekend to take home each Friday. BackPack…

(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGSgGXFxD1c) Allegra Marketing in Princeton helped us put together a bunch of backpacks for foster kids for the back-to-school season. Here’s a video about their efforts, and our Backpack Program. FAFS’ Backpack Program was born from the images of children being removed from their homes for reasons of abuse or neglect with their belongings placed in trash bags.
Today, backpacks for foster children in NJ are given by their foster parents as a gift to welcome foster children into the foster home.
The Backpack Program:
- Comforts NJ children in foster care by providing them with personal items such as a stuffed animal to cuddle, new pajamas and school supplies to ease the transition into the foster home
- Helps foster parents bond with children in their care and provides them with essential items they need to bring a child into their home, even in the middle of the night or on a holiday Learn more here: https://www.fafsonline.org/backpacks-nj-foster-children/

Top 50 Food Banks in Running for Walmart Grant Money; Current Standing
This is a snapshot of Sept 30, afternoon for Walmart grant money. I choose the Oregon Food Bank because that is my location. I am surprised at some of the top Food Banks. Many of them seem like low populated areas that somehow brought people together with technology to get their names out there.
The grant is for $60k, which is significant for a Food Bank. I think Oregon has one of the best…

Fighting child hunger in schools
In southeast Michigan, 39 percent of people who receive emergency food assistance are children under the age of 18. Even more shocking, 11 percent are children who are five years old or younger.*
The Gleaners Community Food Bank is working with teachers and schools to help these children through their BackPack Program. This program provides children with food to help them and their families during the weekend, when children aren't able to rely on their schools' free and reduced-priced meal program.
