Backpacker Tour with Alfred Day 2 - Afternoon

Back in Cunnamulla we grabbed the kayaks and went down the river Warrego. It was amazing to be on the water, which was really quiet and broad the first kms, but after a while we came to parts where trees are growing in the water and it became more and more difficult to find a way with our kayaks - but in fact, it was adventurous as well. We saw a lot of different birds along the river, even an eagle was flying above us.

This evening we were starving and we were really looking forward to our campfire dinner. It was more than delicious and our local Les Capewell, a former drover, told us a lot of stories. Alfred even tried to learn how to crack a whip which he was shown by Les.

Afterwards we tried to find some opals, but only by cracking some stones. We weren't really successful, but we could see some little stains of opal in one stone.

The last night we slept inside and the next morning, Alfred had to leave us by bus, but he was really happy about the tour and had enjoyed every second, which makes us happy as well. And the tour was also a great start for our new German interns, who hadn't seen the sights around Cunnamulla neither.

Backpacker Tour with Alfred Day 2

The second day we went to Rocky Station, a beautiful place with a lot af history and adventure to offer. At first we did the "Wallaby Walk", an amazing natural path along the river where you can see wallabies when you are a little lucky. We weren't, but the walk was great anyways. To reach the station that is on the other side of the river, we had to walk across a swinging footbridge. The bridge is 70m long and in case of a flood it's the only possibility to reach the station. We felt like "Indiana Jones" in one of his most famous adventures by crossing the shaky bridge. We enjoyed lunch with one of the station owners, Chris Webster, but her husband couldn't be there. The lunch was delicious, Alfred tried to play the Didgeridoo which is really dificult and we could go for a little walk through the wonderful house and the neat garden. Everything was so lovely and the time passed that fast that it was, in our opinions, way too early to leave.

Backpacker Tour with Alfred

We went on a great adventurous Backpacker Tour with Alfred from Germany.

At first we were visiting Allan Tannock Weit and spent some time bird watching and taking photos. The weather was great. We left Cunnamulla to head for Charlotte Plains, where we would spend the night. Charlotte Plains is an authentic working sheep and cattle property 54kms east of Cunnamulla. We were greeted by a lot of little, cute lambs running around our legs, but the owners where there as well to give us a warm welcome. It took some time until we had enough of cuddling and patting the lambs and could go to enjoy our smoko. Robyn Russell, the owner herself, took us on a tour around the property and to the shearing sheds where she told us about the history and the current situation of the station and the sheep and wool industry in Australia in general. Afterwards we went to the hot artesian bores, where we spent the night in our swags around the campfire, but at first we had a lovely dinner under the stars. In the morning we took a refreshing morning swim in the bore while the sun was rising, before we enjoyed a perfect breakfast in the sun.
