I MET AJ LEE AND CM PUNK. Not in a dream. Not in a fantasy. In real life. Backstage. Breathing the same air. AJ Lee? She’s electric. Sharp, stylish, and absolutely magnetic. CM Punk? In his hometown of Chicago? It felt like stepping into a legend’s origin story. I’m still trying to process it all. This night wasn’t just special—it was transformative. The Sex Pistols announced their Filthy Lucre reunion tour 25 years ago this week, and I caught the tour when they played the late great Roseland in NYC later that year. They didn’t play New York on their US tour in the Seventies, so it was a very big deal; I interviewed their crew that day, hence my laminate here. The audio team’s monosyllabic answers were hard to make out and they were a bit rough around the edges, with humor to match. Anyway, the band was in top form that night and it was steamy and sweltering in there. Lydon came out and greeted the audience with a popular two-word phrase—and it wasn’t “hi there.” I watched safely at the mixing desk in the middle of the throng and it was madness—dads and sons going crazy in a multi-generational mosh pit. At one point, a guy covered in sweat and blood got thrown halfway over the barrier around the mixing desk. He looked like he was on death’s door and a giant bouncer next to me ran over to the guy and gave him a bottle of water from the sound team’s stash. Roseland’s bouncers hated EVERYBODY, so that’s how bad this guy looked. The guy gratefully took the bottle, drank a swig, drank another swig, and then spit it point blank in the bouncer’s face before throwing the bottle all the way to the stage, where it narrowly missed Lydon. The furious bouncer grabbed him by the face and shoved him back into the mob, where he fell on to his back in the middle of the mosh pit and vanished from view. We never saw him again.
