freshgratednutmeg replied to your post “Tumblr’s New Blog Backup Feature!”
Did you ever hear back from them? I've been exchanging emails for three weeks (and they started ignoring my emails a week and a half ago) and never got an update on the 'closed window while it was generating, and now it doesn't show processing, but throws an error when I try to regenerate' - Would love to know if they've at least solved this for *someone*
@freshgratednutmeg
After the last message I got, which you can read about HERE, I haven't heard anything, and nothing’s changed. :-/ Honestly, I’m starting to think that this was something they tried to quietly roll out before all of the bugs were fixed. They weren’t expecting a bunch of people to take notice and start trying it out. Oor maybe they were and we’re being used as their ‘beta group?’ I have no clue at this point.
Regardless, I have three blogs that have said ‘Backup Processing’ for MONTHS now with no change despite the last message I received from Support. I’ve really kind of given up at this point. Until I’ve got a reason to care about the fact that it’s frozen, I’m going to let it be.
In the meantime, I’m using a (unfortunately) over-complicated free program that essentially does the same thing. It’s called HTTrack Website Copier, and once you get the hang of how to use it, it works fantastically (as long as your computer has the space to hold all the files it generates.) It, unfortunately, can’t save Inbox or IM messages or private posts the way Tumblr’s backup can, but I’ll take what I can get.
Could you update us on your tumblr export adventure? I am currently stuck in the 'Backup processing' stage for over a week. Will there be a happy end in sight or no? I realy just want to save my chat messages more than anything else!
Hello there, Anon! I absolutely can. ^_^ So, Tumblr’s most recent communication with me went like this:
“We’re excited about this feature too! I’m sorry to say that we’re still at work on it–clearly, from what you’re reporting. My understanding of the current status is that our engineering team is working on making the ZIP files function correctly, which is why some of these backups are caught in a seemingly never-ending ‘Backup processing’ state. Also, that state comes from our database, so clearing your browser data wouldn’t have any effect :-/ I’m also told that everything is in place to have those jobs restarted once we’ve got everything working correctly. So please bear with us!Sorry again for the delay and confusion–we hope to have this worked out soon!”
That was sent a little over a month ago, and my three blogs that are stuck in ‘Backup Processing’ are still stuck. :-/
If you REALLY need those chats backed up quickly, the best thing you can do is copy/paste everything into a GoogleDoc file. Definitely more time consuming than a quick, easy backup, but worth it if it’s important enough to you. Otherwise, it sounds like we’re just playing the waiting game at the moment. :( On the bright side, it sounds like the fix will be retroactive (so to speak) and we won’t have to do anything on our end. It’ll just reset and then backup the blog like it should’ve in the beginning.
If it matters for other blogs, I have managed to backup blogs since the frozen ones. In every case, the frozen ones happened because I closed the window (presumably before the backup was finished.) Every time I’ve left the window up for 24 hours, the backup has been a successful one.
