Backyard Fires || Harry & Ember
Staring at her phone for a long minute her cheeks so warm that it felt like her ears were on fire. Anxiety flooding through her chest, small feet carried her through her small house as she rushed around getting ready after starting the barbecue to heat up. Though just a touch of lipstick and a brushing of mascara was about all the make up she knew how to do, it’d work, and she didn’t want to look as plain as usual when he came, especially with her comfy sweats and the flannel she wore pulled over her tank top to keep her warm in the evening breeze.
The music on the little Bluetooth speaker she’d found at the gas station a week before gave off impressive sound for a little cylinder, hissing of the steaks as they hit the screen on the barbecue all too satisfying while she waited for the sound of the gate that would signal the arrival of her guest. Wilbur on a long leash and staked to the ground to keep him from escaping through the newly fallen sections staring longly at the distance between her and himself. Heart hitting the inside of her ribs hard enough to feel like it was impeding her breathing, the tiny southern belle had to remind herself that it was in no way a date. It was an attempt at cheering up a friend.
Glancing up when she finally heard the gate open and then close again, she waited for him to come around the corner and up the deck steps before throwing her arms around him in a tight embrace. “I got the sense that you needed a hug.”
