Steve was also getting antsy about adding Bucky to the Avengers' roster. He had to not only coerce Bucky into getting fitted for an Avengers uniform, but he also had to try HIS GOSH DARN BEST to not be distracted by Bucky's beefy, unrelentingly distracting physique.

Wilde, Dickens?

Wilde: Would you rather relax by reading a new book or by re-reading a well loved book?

Recently it’s been re-reading an old fav, but usually I love exploring new worlds. I think that the comfort of re-reading an old fav is part of the reason my brain tends to adhere to fanfic as well. I’ve created this monster where I don’t want to meet new characters. such an arduous chore.

Dickens: a book you didn't enjoy?

Is it cheating to say Twilight? I think it’s cheating to say Twilight. I didn’t have much love for a single one of the pretentious literature books I was supposed to read for my English Lit degree.

Actually, yeah, didn’t super enjoy Dickens. Fucking hated Middlemarch. If you tell me it’s supposed to be good for me I’ll probably dislike it on principle. I’m contrary like that.

Abraham Lincoln’s signature on a Civil War pardon.

Photos of the soldier I was writing my undergraduate thesis on when he was attempting to get a medical pension.

Signatures of paleontologists Roy Chapman Andrews and Barnum Brown when I was interning at AMNH.

At my current job, someone donated a WWII uniform and it was in such incredible condition that I freaked out.

An old recording of The Goon Show at my last temp gig. I freaked out over that, too.

Top Five Fictional Crushes Throughout My 28-Almost-29 Years On This Rock:

No joke, Wedge Antilles. The only fictional character I’ve ever referred to as “my husband.” That’s a high honor. I don’t even think I have to explain how freaking amazing Wedge is.

When I was 12, my first crush ever was Roy from Fire Emblem from pretty much the moment I unlocked him on Super Smash Bros. Melee at the end of 2001. I was a late bloomer, I guess, because I hadn’t had a real crush until that point and I was in 7th grade.

Stan Murch, from the Dortmunder books. Who is a getaway driver who lives with his mom, a cabbie, in Canarsie, Brooklyn. But he’s a total dork and he’s a really responsible driver and I adore him even though he steals things.

Probably half of the characters in the Sharpe series at one point or another for various reasons. (That series did make me into a historian, though, so that worked out well.)

At least one of my own characters, probably many, over the years. Notably, in high school I referred to my own Dustin Thatcher as “my ideal husband,” mostly because he’s a cinnamon roll.

I answered 9 already, so I’ll skip to the other two. :)

12. Have you ever written a fic and decided never to publish it? Why? 

Oh God, tons.  I think you guys would be surprised at how LITTLE I post versus what I’ve written.  I have so many fics in my Drafts folder, it’s insane.  Most of the time, I wind up using bits and pieces from unpublished fics in other fics, so it’s not that bad, and hey, sometimes I need to figure out what I’m trying to do or say with a story before I get it right.

26. What aspect of your writing do you most enjoy to see praised?

Honestly? That it feels real.  That’s the biggest compliment ever ever ever.  I’m not interested in writing the prettiest stories with the most flowery and gorgeous language (but I admire the people who do) - I’m only interested in getting my characters and story as close to the emotional truth as possible.  So when I nail that - when I get the ‘this feels real’ or ‘this feels totally IC’ - I’m a beaming ray of sunshine for, like, a week.

39 for the fic questions?

Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them? 

Oh yeah, I’ve gotten a few - mostly related to “ew, I can’t believe you wrote that pairing or that trope or how DARE you have X top when they’re CLEARLY a bottom, I didn’t sign up to read that, etc, etc” I could go on, but you get the idea.

And mostly, I either delete the comment or I figuratively slap them right back.  “Oh I’m so sorry that this art (and yes, writing is an art) I am providing to you for FREE doesn’t meet your exact standards about what you think a fic should be, but next time, either hit the back button, pay attention to the pairing or the tags, but mostly, fuck off.”

I mean, look, I’m all for constructive criticism and having a dialogue with the reader, but life is honestly too short for rude assholes. :D
