Bad Alchemy - Slapp Happy / Henry Cow (1975)
I'm currently reading Benjamin Piekut's astounding chronicle of the history of Henry Cow. They're a fascinating group, but I bet dealing with the trio of Fred Frith/Chris Cutler/Tim Hodgkinson must've been an ungodly humorless endeavor in the mid-70s.
No wonder Peter Blegvad was relieved when he got kicked out of the band:
“The crime I was guilty of was flippancy, In the early ’70s, Henry Cow were very strict Marxist-Leninists, and I couldn’t toe the party line. I don’t think I specifically mocked their ideology, but I was, and still am, a bit of a joker. [...] It’s just very hard for me to take anything seriously, and when it gets po-faced, that’s when I find it irresistible to mock it.” - Peter Blegvad, 1998
I dig them, but I dunno if I can forgive them for devouring Slapp Happy after they made this record.
