The Pedoscope Shows Good Fit/Bad Fit
I was reading the post about how to choose a therapist and I wondered if there are ever times you feel like you weren't a good fit with the client? Everyone says that if you don't with with your therapist you should look around- how would that work from the other side? Has that ever happened? Never thought about it before so I'm curious
It’s totally happened to me. Twice I think. I want to be *super clear* that the clients who I felt this way about didn’t do anything wrong. It was a fit issue. For whatever reason, it just didn’t work. I give myself a couple of months to settle into a clinical relationship. Often kids are told that they “have to be in therapy” so they can exhibit some really irritating or annoying behaviors to have a little bit of control in the situation or protecting themselves or the like. So I want to get past that a bit and see if I’m really having a reaction. If I am, I really look at that with clinicians I trust so that I can look at my own counter transference.
I will tell a client and/or the family that it’s not a good clinical fit or that I feel another clinical who’s area of expertise is more aligned with a client would be a better fit. I’ve been a lot of agencies so often it’s not super easy to do this but I will transfer to another clinician on my team. In private practice, you refer out to a couple of different options.
