Getting caught up on the excellent Man At Arms series on youtube (because I am terrible at keeping up on things) and this particular episode struck me as worth sharing. And sharing a couple of things I found particularly of note, because if there's one thing I like to do, it's needlessly blather at my followers.
Firstly, it's interesting to note that he mentions that Gimli's axe is actually well weighted, which is sort of unusual for film axes. Swords are usually pretty well weighted, but in my experience with film replica axes, they tend to be a overbalanced in the front, which makes for a good swing, but not a recovery.
Secondly, the method for producing modern Damascus Steel is fascinating, although his more recent episode on the Assassin's Creed IV weapons shows another method of production. For a style of metal that was so highly prized in early swords, it's interesting to hear how easily reproducable it is in the modern era.
