If when faced with rage You're consumed with much the same Peace is out of reach
We know that the air we breathe is shared with the oaks and the fir trees of the forests, that the water we drink pours down from floating clouds as rain before it comes into our cells. All that we possess and are is a gift given us by the wholeness from which we come and to which we return. Our minds and bodies are not separate. The glimpses of oneness awaken a natural compassion and sense of justice out of which we come to treat the other parts of ourselves-all that is- wisely. Awakening to oneness, we discover that we have the same last name as the mountains, the streams, and the redwood trees.

In this life we only have ourselves to rely on to attain true peace and happiness. The only permanence which stays with us from our birth to our death is ourselves. And yet, it is true that no man is an island. We are all inexplicably linked, we all rely on the work of others for our basic needs for food, shelter, clothing and work. Every organism that has ever been is linked to you, right this moment. So while it is true that the Buddhist practitioner knows happiness cannot be found in other people, they also know that the Middle Way cannot be walked without them.
Without understand the source of suffering , human beings strive to gain happiness by possessiveness and greed, through violence and hatred. We act out of delusion and ignorance, creating pain as an inevitable result. Our grasping, our aggressive entanglement in the world brings with it unavoidable struggle and loss, yet all is done purportedly to seek safety, to find happiness.

Go ahead, light your candles and burn your incense and ring your bells and call out to god, but watch out, because god will come and he will put you on his anvil and fire up his forge and beat you and beat you until he turns brass into pure gold.
