“The collaborative spirit of custom jewelry is romantic and intimate. Working with clients is an ongoing alliance filled with hilarious and humbling moments; yet, the experience is individual and unique. I honor this convention with each gold mouthpiece, aka Grill. Grillz are internal high jewelry. They labor the same fine jewelry techniques of Van Cleef Arpels, Chaumet, and Chanel. It is their design that warrants such quality artisanal skills from diamond pave to gemstone inlay. And it is Charlie “Goldcap”, a 74-year old Korean Grill Master and expert jeweler who partners the project with me. Renowned for his solid gold mouthpieces since the early 90s, Charlie represents a breed of NYC artisan whose archive was impressive yet nonexistent and undocumented. As part of the @BijulesIncubator for several years, his work is now celebrated and recognized on the likes of @erykahbadu , @rosalia.vt , @megantheestaalion, and many more. « Researchers date the first #Grillz as far back as 2,500 BC when a team of early 20th century archaeologists discovered a man in Giza buried with two gold teeth. Etruscan women wore grillz as a status symbol up until 100 AD. Mayans wore grillz too. The dichotomy of luxury and street style inspires my jewelry point of view. At its foundation, the root of all my designs and projects develops from this cultural tension between high and low. Inspired directly by a photo documentary of Senegalese wrestlers by @zuekster Alessandro Simonetti, a single image spawned an immediate idea. Wrestlers in Senegal are nationally celebrated and their prematch rituals include potion dousing, sigil burning and thread bearing. Balla Gaye II, one of these famed athletes, wore a thick thread with a tightly- tied pebble from his village hanging from his mouth. In that moment of photo review, I knew I would make Gold Floss.
