Day 2 Romantic relationship day

This is my second entry for the original fic fest by @originalficfest  

One of the romantic subplots follows two lovebirds who haven’t quite confessed their feelings for each other yet. (those adorable idiots, why can’t they see the other likes them back?) 

Distance 

All Kodyr could see when he closed his eyes was her. The girl he had fallen in love with years ago, yet he had never even had had the courage to walk up to her and say it out loud. 

Her beautiful blue eyes, her unique birthmark - which she hated - and her blonde hair that was always tied up in a ponytail. 

They had both been friends from the very beginning. They were both halflings, considered outcasts and discriminated. He had been fortunate enough it was more usual for a woman to fall for a dwarf than for an Orc. However, being a halfling had never benefited him in any form.

She had stood up for him when he was bullied, ignoring the bullies’ remarks on her and taking care of his needs before her own. Perhaps that was why he had become as altruistic as he was, perhaps he had been inspired by her courage to make sure others were okay before tending to their own problems. 

He sighed. He should just give up on her. Obviously, there was no way she liked him back romantically. He liked their friendship and wouldn’t do anything to endanger that. If he confessed to her and it didn’t work out, things would get weird way too soon. 

“Kodyr! Commander Riggs wants to see you!” he then heard her voice. 

He turned around and his brown eyes met with her blue ones. She wore a beautiful smile until someone else entered the picture. 

“If it isn’t the half-dwarf and his freak girlfriend.” 

“Shut it Bozo, Baely is not a freak. She’s a good person and she’s not my girlfriend.” Yet, he added mentally. 

Baely averted her gaze after his remark concerning her not being his girlfriend. If only she would just be able to tell him the truth. She treasured their friendship and their deep conversations, yet she wanted more. She wanted to believe he felt the same way. 

But he most likely didn’t. The way he acted around her made it quite obvious he just viewed their relationship as a good friendship without the potential she could see. 

She hid behind her signature smile and pulled him along. “Let’s not worry about what the moron thinks and head to the commander.” 

“I’m not a moron!”

“That’s what they all say!” 

Kodyr chuckled. Her humour and her ability to deal with racism that well, were two of the many reasons he had fallen for her. He couldn’t help but smile when the light fell just the right way onto her skin, making her lips more glossy and making her look more beautiful than ever. Not that she wasn’t beautiful without that light to him, though many would disagree. 

He could have told her right that moment, yet he didn’t. That was going to have to wait. Even though he knew that if he wanted to let her know he would have to take the initiative, he didn’t. A part of him hoped that someday soon she would be the one to confess and that the moment that they started calling what they had ‘love’ would come soon.

But until that moment, he would just have to tell her he loved her when she was not listening.
