The TOS Enterprise is of the 'Constellation Class' and is one of 12.
Officially, it's a Constitution-class iirc. But these official details about it aren't even in TOS. "The lore" had zero influence on what choices were made wrt the depiction of the ship in TOS, or wrt much of anything else, and tells us nothing about why those choices were made and what the show was trying to do with them as a project in its own right with its own goals. That's the essential question—why.
That's what my response was really about: how so much of what's "in" TOS or "inconsistent" within TOS isn't even in it, but imposed backwards from later (often much later) franchise lore rather than saying much of anything about TOS itself. This stuff gets framed as mistakes or failures of TOS, or at least something that doesn't make sense internally to it, and it's like... okay but decisions made 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 years later (mostly by other people) don't really tell us anything about what TOS was trying to do with its choices or why or even whether they succeeded.
