“Happy Mother’s Day, Mum!”
the farthest star north.
She is twenty going on twenty-one as she tries to shield her cousin, her sister in every way but the one that most consider to matter, from the weight of an inheritance that may very well kill her.
She is seven and going to be eight in twenty days as she stands under the harsh gaze of her grandmother, as snot trickles down into her mouth like a fowl miasma, her words cutting across her skin like a vanquished blade.
“Stand up straighter girl, for even whatever fiend my daughter beget you with, you are still a Frey and a Frey you shall yet be.”
Tragedy is the blood and the bane of her name, her family, she’s come to realize as she pushes her cousin a little higher, a little farther, as if it can free her from the legacy of bones and dust that she’s been born into.
“I’d take your place, if there were way.” She says, and means it, even as the words are lost in the confused gaze of the girl in front of her.
“If you wanted to use the swing, all you had to do was ask, Marnie.”
