Baking Assistant Job - Day One
I have survived, if only barely!
Behind a cut for length
Today I learned much, and did some things I’ve never done. For one, I cleaned, seeded, roasted and pureed eight pie pumpkins. At home I would have just bought pumpkin puree in a can but nope, at Whisked we do every last thing from scratch!
I also zested and juiced like a million lemons, measured a bunch of spices, put away clean dishes, grated 25 lbs of butter (with a food processor THANK GOD), and learned how to prep ingredients for bread.
On the less stellar side, it was 30 degrees Celsius today plus humidity, and we were in a production kitchen with an oven running and an induction cook top in occasional use. Add to that the heat of all the mixers and food processors running... It got far too hot.
I overheated. The supervisor noticed and sent me to get ice water and cool off. I came back and kept working but it just kept getting hotter. Eventually the supervisor was like, “Okay it is way too hot in here, go home, we’ll do the rest of this in the morning” and I ended up going home an hour early.
It’s supposed to be somewhat cooler tomorrow, and then it’s gonna drop right down to more seasonal temperatures by Thursday so woo, that shouldn’t be so much of an issue.
I got along pretty well with one of the owners, she seemed to find the way I talk funny - like how I noted that the bench scraper ‘lived’ with the spatulas when I was putting things away. She also got a smile out of the fact that I was having a conversation with a wasp who had made its way into the bakery (despite our every effort to keep wasps out!) who was messing with my lemons. I was all like, “Are you a paying customer? No, didn’t think so, these are not for you”
The other owner seems more distant and less friendly, but I think that’s just kind of how she is - a more serious, down-to-business person. I’m sure we’ll get used to each other over time. The few times we did interact, she favored me with a smile. She’s just not the talkative type!
Also oh my god my whole body hurts. My foot is killing me, since I was on my feet for most of nine hours, my hands ache from all the juicing and seeding, and just... just everything. Ow. Another thing I’ll have to get used to with time.
Anyway!! That’s enough babbling from me.
TL;DR: New job is hard work but I enjoyed it and also it was too hot and we had to call it a day an hour early.
