(Siblings get to blame each other for things, right? He hasn't had one for very long, but he's pretty sure they do.)
...Though she WAS right that he didn't actually want to spend all summer job-shadowing Father as an intern. And if he actually wins, he could use the money to get his own place! That'll probably depend on his partner though, since Gil doesn't know much about baking.

Tarvek's sister has medical bills that are piling up.
(His family's money and assets are staying frozen until the authorities finish investigating his father, and his extended family refuse to risk dirtying their own reputations with the mess to help her.)
Luckily, Mechanicsburg isn't too far away, and Violetta agreed to sneak him onto the final Contestant List. Now all Tarvek needs to do is show up, put in the work, and win.

Agatha's uncle is getting one hell of a lecture if he ever comes back, because how on earth do you decide not to warn someone about all of this?!
(And who was he to decide that she should be kept from Mechanicsburg, anyway? She would have been much better prepared to run the place if she'd actually grown up here.)
Now she needs to keep up with both online college courses and managing the local government, while proving to her people (citizens? constituents? Van suggested "devoted underlings" the other day, and she couldn't tell if he was joking or not) that unlike the LAST generation, she genuinely wants to be here for them. The good news is that since Agatha is an intense enthusiast of both Engineering and Cake, helping run the Baking Impossible competition that Mechanicsburg is hosting should practically be a fun break for her, right?
