Rant on Indonesian/Australian Government: BALI NINE EXECUTIONS

Focusing specifically on the Bali Nine and the death penalty that the two supposed ‘ring leaders’ are about to face, there is a large amount of hypocrisy surrounding the situation from all parties. It is quite clear that the Indonesian government is being harsh on this particular case as it features two westerners and not two of their own people. I don’t know if this gives them a sense of power? Or if they enjoy the Australian government almost begging for two criminals back? Or why exactly they are using this case specifically to prove a point. But it is definitely clear that these two men are being made an example of - simply because they are from a western society and they aren't the only people being made an example by the Indonesian government. Take Schapelle Corby as another example, she was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for smuggling 4.2kg of marijuana on to their land, yet there are several cases where Indonesian natives have been caught with a larger quantity/harder drugs in their possession, yet received a shorter sentence, this seems to be due to the fact that the Indonesian government seems to be trying to make an example of western people, disobeying their laws and regulations.

Another point regarding the Indonesian government enforcing the death penalty on these two men that i cannot fathom is that between the years of 2009-2012, there were no executions in Indonesia for ANY CRIME as they country was under the presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Although S.B.Y did enforce 21 executions under his ruling, none were made between 2009-and 2012. The Bali 9 were sentenced in 2006 and all but two were sentenced for either a number of years in prison, or life behind bars. The two men that are sentenced to death are currently on ‘Death Island’, awaiting execution via the firing squad.

I believe that the media convinced the general public that these two men are the ring leaders of this operation, but who is to really know? I also believe that the Australian Federal Police didn't do the right thing by letting the Bali 9 get caught and prosecuted in Indonesia. They all had some part in the crime and all of them deserved to serve a suitable punishment for their actions, but this should have happened Australia. Where these people’s rights are protected and there was no jeopardy to their lives. I also don’t understand why the Indonesian government wouldn’t willingly return the criminals to Australia to be prosecuted by their own authority. I don’t understand this because Indonesia has been fighting with other countries in order to get prisoners of their own citizenship off of death-row from other countries. Currently there are 229 cases of Indonesians who have been sentenced to death that the Indonesian government are fighting to protect.

An example of how the Indonesian Government has been unjust is the Bali Bombings. The Bali Bombings killed 202 people including 88 Australians and although 4 of the people involved in this event were sentenced to the firing squad, there were people involved who had received ridiculous sentences such as Abu Bakar Bashir who was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for ‘conspiracy’.  Is it fair that two men who were fed to the Indonesian Government by their own federal Police for attempting to smuggle $4 million worth of Heroin in to OUR COUNTRY - NOT THEIRS,  should face the same sentence as four people who killed 202 people - including 38 Indonesians and endangered many other lives? Is that fair? It is quite clear that the Indonesian government is being harsh on this particular case as it features two westerners and not two of their own people. Now i am a strong believer that all humans are equal and everyone deserves a set of basic human rights, one of them being that their life is valued and shouldn’t be taken from them. So the question is, Do the two supposed ‘ring leaders’ deserve to be put to death for attempting to smuggle $4 million worth of heroin from Bali to Australia? These are just opinions and beliefs based off of what i have witnessed through the media and academic texts, id love to hear other views though.

let us never forget the tragedy that happened 11 years ago today, killing 202 people, 88 of them aussie in the bali bombings, you will forever be in our hearts. its strange to think that only a 15 minute drive away this horrible thing happened.
