Written By: Astria R. @SuperstarTaye ____________________________________ Last October, U.K. shoe company #Freed has partnered with #BalletBlack, a London-based ballet company known for showcasing the talents of people of #African and #Asian decent, to create the first line of ballet shoes for people of color! ____________________________________ This collection includes a brown and bronze shade making it easier for people of color to find a closer match to their skin tone! While this may not seem like a big deal, it actually is. #Pointe shoes, or #ballet slippers have historically been available only in light pink, white, or peach. ____________________________________ American company Gaynor Minden has been selling brown pointe shoes for two years now, but Freed highlights how much dancers of color have to go through in order to find their perfect match. ____________________________________ In the past, people of color would have to take it upon themselves to dye or paint the shoes down with foundation, which is called “pancaking,” in order to match their skin tone—and dancers already undergo a tedious process of tailoring their shoes to their feet so imagine how much time and energy is being saved here! ____________________________________ This is a #Plié, #Pirouette, and #GrandeJeté in the right direction towards inclusion in the ballet community for people of color. To this day, dancers of color are challenging old traditions and creating new beauty standards in ballet. Hopefully we can have an entire palette of colors in these pointe shoes in the future and name them after the #FentyBeauty shades 😉 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzrn7e7p_xE/?igshid=1enda6n2s6vvq
BALLET BLACK: TRIPLE BILL | WED 06 - SAT 09 NOV 2019
Celebrating their eighteenth year, there’s always excitement when Ballet Black take to the stage. Their popular programme contrasts dramatic and inventive storytelling in a lively showcase of modern ballets. Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, recent recipient of the Freedom of the City of London for her contribution to diversity in ballet, the company celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent. Ingoma (meaning song), created by company dancer and choreographer Mthuthuzeli November is a fusion of ballet, African dance and singing. This premiere and Barbican co-commission portrays a milestone moment in South African history and imagines the struggles of black miners and their families in 1946, when 60,000 of them took courageous strike action. Ballet Black reprise Martin Lawrance’s “wickedly intelligent” (The Guardian) Pendulum – an intimate duet which premiered in 2009 and the choreographer’s first work made for the company. CLICK! an original, light-hearted work by Scottish Ballet’s choreographer-in-residence, Sophie Laplane, also a premiere, completes the Triple Bill. Wed 06 - Sat 09 Nov 2019 Age Guidance: 7+ Tickets from £10
