"We could all do with examining how the system unfairly benefits us personally" - I'm currently joining in with #oursharedshelf reading @renieddolodge's #WhyImNoLongerTalkingTo (White People) About Race. A vital read for understanding the history and present structure of systematic racism and oppression in the U.K. - the thing I find striking is that whilst specific instances and anecdotes are new to me, it is not at all a surprise - recognising the ease with which I travel in today's worlds when odds are stacked against people of colour due to generations of compacted ideas designed to maintain status quo. This is evident in the work force, the material we share and elevate, the way any attempts to highlight inequality are met with silence, resistance or resignation. #ChangeBook is important to me not only as a physical example of shining talent from the authors, but as a first tentative step at addressing my own blind spots and beginning to work towards dismantling them. This must be an ongoing endeavour and now thanks to Reni's book I have a better understanding of the process that brought us to this place. Simply put, it's a must read. I'm also struck by the slow growth of progress and change, as demonstrated in @helloiammariam's new count of YA by UK POC published this year - again, the abysmally small number of just 9 titles. It is no use to simply say we must do better - we must act. I've linked Mariam's article of the 9 titles published published this year - one way you and I can act now is to preorder them. 🖤 #books #reading #nonfiction #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #BritishPOC #POCwriters #bamewriters #whiteprivilege #igreads @oursharedshelf @emmawatson
