TOKEN Magazine is incredibly excited to reveal the cover for Issue 2, illustrated by Clio Isadora.

This issue is on the theme ‘bodies’ and explores bodies through poems, short stories, life writing and illustrations.

Call For Submissions

TOKEN Magazine is calling for submissions for Issue 2, and this time we have a theme - BODIES. This can be interpreted as you wish. 

We are accepting: 

 - Fiction/Non-fiction of up to 2500 words (maximum 2 pieces per submission). 

- Artwork/Photography (maximum 4 pieces per submission) and a summary of your work to go alongside the piece(s).

- Illustrations - please send across recent illustrations, and once we have the writing sorted you will be given briefs.

With your submission we ask that you please also include your biography (max 200 words). If it is not obvious please can you also write why you feel you are under-represented in the arts and literature. It is important that you do this as we want Issue 2 to have as many diverse voices as possible. 

 Send your submissions to [email protected] by 15 July 2017 (midnight). Any submissions after this time will not be accepted. 

 Please note: 

 - We are not accepting poetry or academic essays for this issue. 

- We are not accepting works published online or in print before, or that are currently under consideration. 

 - All contributors will get a complimentary copy of the magazine. 

 - This is a not-for-profit magazine.

Issue 1

Editor’s Note

Welcome to the very first issue of TOKEN Magazine. I can’t quite believe the issue has come together and I am so excited to share the works of exceptionally talented writers, artists and illustrators with you.  

Inside this magazine you will find stories from unheard voices, differing from the perspectives we regularly see in the mainstream media. In times of uncertainty, hearing stories from these unheard writers and artists is needed more than ever. We will find commonalities between ourselves and the writers/artists, and if not, learn first-hand about a person’s lived experience, all the while understanding that one person cannot be a representative of a group. We all have our own stories to tell.    

There was no set theme for Issue 1 and yet there is a connection between all the pieces in this issue: that of isolation, lacking a sense of unity with the world (although in some of the pieces this becomes resolved). I don’t think it is a coincidence that the majority of the pieces in this issue have this theme, and I very much hope that through discourse in the future these will be stories less of isolation, and more of togetherness.

Until that time comes, I hope you enjoy the issue.

The name comes from the experience many people of colour face in everyday life: tokenism. This is also the case for women, LGBT and people with disabilities. TOKEN magazine is an outlet to work against that - diversity of voice is essential to the magazine, not an afterthought. Thank you to everyone who submitted! We have been inundated with submissions - something we weren’t expecting for such a new magazine. 

All submitters will be informed about the outcome of their submission in April 2017.

TOKEN magazine is now open for submission.

We are looking for short stories (in any genre/style) between 500-5000 words, non-fiction pieces, illustrations, photography, and artwork. As this issue is our first we really want as many diverse creative works as possible, from a range of writers and artists - so if in doubt, submit! There is no theme for this issue.

All contributors will be given a hard copy of the zine which will be published in summer 2017.
