Alex watched Matt cautiously. Why she had let Steven talk her into this, she had no idea. Why Matt had let Steven talk him into this, she had even less of a clue.
He shooed her away from the boot of the car, refusing to let her carry anything and asking that she put on some tea for them instead. She had huffed at his stubbornness, but had finally given in and slipped into the cabin they would be staying at when he’d given her those puppy eyes. She never could resist when he hit her with those.
She had wandered around the cabin for a bit, taking in the layout and sighing contently at the rustic feeling before drifting into the kitchen and setting about preparing their tea. She did her best to ignore her concern every time she heard him swear as he clunked something inside. She worried her bottom lip between her teeth as she lost herself in thought.
What was Steven thinking? This was honestly the most ridiculous idea she’d ever heard him come up with. She fiddled with the ring on her finger, her cheeks flushing as she did so.
“D’you know that he’s got an itinerary set up for us?” She startled at the sound of Matt’s voice and nearly spilled the milk she’d been pouring.
“I know,” she replied, having seen it when she’d made her tour of the place.
“Honestly, I’d like to know why he thinks our chemistry is lacking,” he growled. She looked at him over her shoulder and had to resist the urge to laugh at the cross look on his face. She didn’t laugh because she was asking herself the very same question. She watched as he fidgeted with the ring on his own finger. “And how does he even think this is going to help?
“I haven’t got a clue, Darling,” she replied patiently. She set their tea down on the table and wanted to roll her eyes at him when he pulled her chair out for her. “But we can’t really go against his wishes, now can we? This is supposed to be character development.”
“Yeah, but we’re not here as River and the Doctor. We’re here as Matt and Alex pretending to be bloody married.”
She couldn’t stop her next comment. “And I’m certain River and the Doctor’s itinerary would be much different than ours,” she replied matter-of-factly. It took them both a moment to register what she’d said, and she quickly slapped her hands over her mouth as Matt sputtered over his tea.
