idlib province west of Aleppo is home to what the Arab locals called the Dead or Forgotten Cities, named such because at the end of antiquity, the area flourished and grew from olive oil production within the Roman empire. This all changed during the Islamic conquests, which cut the trade routes and connection to the empire that produced several hundred urbanized villages in the area. By the 8th century, the area was totally abandoned in favour of new population centres built by the umayyads
