Last winter I decided to start to learn sewing with a sewing machine. I already knew some of the basics, back at elementary school I learned stitching and sewing by hand. But I wanted more, I wanted to design and create clothing and accessories. So, there I was, with my very first sewing machine and a small book that contained all the basics I had to know for a start.
Now I am well aware not everybody can afford all the fancy books and some things come with experience as well. So I decided to share my growing knowledge with you. Note that I am not a professional whatsoever, I'm in the middle of a learning process, just as you might be.
So, this is the beginning of a series of small tutorials on little things you can easily make on your own to get into sewing and dressmaking.
There are a few tools that are basically needed.
Thread, needle(s) and tape measure - There are many different kinds of threads and needles, and I will talk about them in a later tutorial. All you need for this is a basic mix of sewing needles, a few fixing pins and synthetic thread. You can get these things in starter kits, which often come with some other tools as well.
Pen and tailor's chalk - You will always need to draw something, on paper or fabric. Tailor's chalk is available in small pieces, but there are pens as well, such as the one in this picture:
Scissors - Later on you will need more than just one pair of scissors. Actually I would recommend you to start with two of them. You will need a pair of scissors for fabric, and one for cutting paper, thread and all the other things. It is advisable to use scissors different in size, shape and sharpness for different material. One thing is very important: Do NOT use your fabric scissors for cutting anything else. They will become blunt.
These are the essential tools you'll need for making a bandana. Next time I'll show you how to start.
Lieutenant Sophie, over and out!
