Check out “Beater” by New York’s The Amputees. First words that comes to mind are “raw” and “exhausting” – as in frenetic drums, loud guitars, low fidelity, straight-ahead, make-the-neighbors-call-the-cops vintage punk rock. The presentation is angry and the lyrics follow suit. So, next time you’re in the mood to smash someone or something, check out The Amputees’ “Beater”. Honest, vintage punk rock.
Soup of the Day
Emerging alt rock band and Los Angeles natives, Kiven, have announced the arrival of their third EP, 1840, slated for release later this month. The EP’s first single, an emotive and groove-driven opener, “Hope & Smoke,” sets the tone for the rest of the EP and exemplifies what the band has in store for a debut full-length release that is set for early 2013.
1840 continues to progress forward both sonically and emotively, reflecting Kiven's musical and personal growth. In addition to the new material showcased in “Hope and Smoke”, 1840 includes re-written tracks from their previous releases that the band has re-approached in a new light. The tracks off of 1840 build in a more organic and naturally emotive pull on the listener with pocket drums, grooving bass lines, hard hitting guitars, soaring vocals and lush harmonies.
Though recorded at Sonikwire Studios in Irvine, CA, 1840 derives its name from the address of the band’s practice studio where they spent countless nights progressing and working on their sound. 1840 is both a continuation of the band’s trajectory and also a fresh, captivating introduction to a bright future.

Typical Cats return, the last of the great true school crews—bearers of transformed tradition, innovators par excellence, and heralds of an undying devotion to the science and magic of boom bap music. The latest installment in the TC saga is 3, their third studio full-length. It plays like a message in a bottle from Hip Hop’s timeless present to the bizarre post-physical, digital, viral world in which we live.
1. The Thunderlizards- "Broner"
Check out our latest Soup of the Day post on The Thunderlizards
The Thunderlizards are an obnoxiously loud punk-blues band from Fayetteville, Arkansas. If you’re into rowdy rock, punk aesthetics, slide guitar, booze and raw power, than The Thunderlizards are ready to destroy your mind.
“Broner” is the lead off track from the band’s Grump Sessions EP and serves a ridiculously raw and fast junk-punk party starter for every house show (see above video) and pre-bar brawl bonanza the band plays. If you take this music seriously, shame on you. Pump your fists and spread your legs ‘cause here comes the thunder.
Here is a free download of The Grump Sessions EP to get you all riled up and sweaty.

5. Rubblebucket- "(Focus) Oversaturated"
Led by the musical couple of front woman Kalmia Traver and bandleader/trumpeter Alex Toth, Rubblebucket has spent the last four years building a reputation as a band that blurs the lines between psychedelic indie rock, upbeat dance, and radiant, left-field arrangements. The Brooklyn, NY by way of Boston and Vermont band has evolved into something that is “utterly post-genre—horns, synth, guitars, harmonies—a smile-inducing point on the tangent that connects Björk and Broken Social Scene”, which is to say that you never know what you’ll see or hear next.
4. Good Night, States- "Ceilings"
Guitars erupt over vintage synths as Good Night, States fuses familial indie quirks with steady rock and roll sensibility. Four part harmony, homemade guitar pedal white noise, and warbly vintage synths augment stand-alone songwriting to craft a memorable, melodic live show.

Little Hurricane is a boy-girl blues duo from San Diego, California that have been showering music fans with blues-laced tales of turbulent love on their debut album, Homewrecker.
The duo has left a trail of destruction on the road, as they are known to up stages with ‘vintage furniture, effectively creating a mobile living room, only to completely destroy it.’ “By the end of our set the ‘home’ we’ve created on stage is literally wrecked,” CC and Tone explain, “with both of us dripping in sweat and looking like a hot mess. It’s more rock ‘n’ roll than the record. With all the rattling that comes from our homemade speaker cabinets, you really feel the dirtiness live. We give it all we’ve got, and we never hold anything back.”
Haunted Heart is the break through single from the record that have fans and respected outfits like Rolling Stone claiming they are “set to break out”.

Tweak Bird (Alternative Rock): Tweak Bird, brothers, Ashton and Caleb Bird, the now Los Angeles by-the-way-of Southern Illinois-based duo have been making loud, heavy music together for a better part of a decade in various incarnations. Driven by big drums, fuzzed out baritone guitar and tandem spacey vocal melodies, Tweak Bird effortlessly blend raw stoner rock and catchy pop bits to form short joyous bursts aural gratification.
Rubblebucket (Indie Pop): Rubblebucket has spent the last four years building a reputation as a band that blurs the lines between psychedelic indie rock, upbeat dance, and radiant, left-field arrangements. The Brooklyn, NY by way of Boston and Vermont band has evolved into something that is "utterly post-genre—horns, synth, guitars, harmonies—a smile-inducing point on the tangent that connects Björk and Broken Social Scene", which is to say that you never know what you'll see or hear next.
Good Night, States (Indie Rock): Guitars erupt over vintage synths as Good Night, States fuses familial indie quirks with steady rock and roll sensibility. Four part harmony, homemade guitar pedal white noise, and warbly vintage synths augment stand-alone songwriting to craft a memorable, melodic live show.

The 4-track debut EP, "By The Morning" is Farewell Luna's debut album.
Bigger Thomas (Ska/Reggae): Celebrating over 20 years of ska and reggae! Bigger Thomas continues to keep crowds moving and grooving to their patented version of reggae ska that includes a heavy dose of traditional and 2-Tone ska thrown in for good measure. The band reflects the cultural diversity of the city they call home with members who have roots in the NYC metropolitan area as well as Haiti, Jamaica, Canada and the UK.
Ghost Box Orchestra (Post-Rock): Psychedelic western soundtracks infused with desert rock and surf reverb, Ghost Box Orchestra is a mainly instrumental band. Their songs speak in subtle whispers and fuzz-freaked panoramas full of stomping rhythms and hazy shoegazey guitar slabs. The Only Light On, their first album released in July of 2010, creates a place where music meets meditation, where spacey post-rock melts into psychedelia and fades into hazy instrumental daybreak.
Gwyn Fowler (Folk/Singer-Songwriter): Gwyn Fowler is a indie folk singer-songwriter from the shores of South Carolina that writes and sings about heartbreak, happiness, and bed-time ghost stories. Soup of the Day
GoodWolf is the side solo project of Tyler Grady (lead singer of West Virginia grunge outfit, Sleepwalker). As GoodWolf, Grady adds a catchier, more accessible element to his slacker-rock raucous that reminds me of Lou Barlow (Sebadoh); unrefined yet endearing.
On "Last Year", Grady evokes the spirit of early 90s college rock over a bed of crunchy, reverb-laden guitars as he illuminates a day in the life of a person struggling with growing up and finding himself in adulthood. How many times have you told your friends “this is the last year I can act like this…”?
Goodwolf – Last Year from Geoff Hoskinson on Vimeo.
This single is from GoodWolf's debut release, Shitty Kids, which is available as a free download. "Last Year" is the obvious stand out single from the record, but Grady proves he isn't a one trick pony with songs like "Help", "Chain of Hearts" and "Bikini Girl". Shitty Kids shows how Grady can shine as a lone wolf compared to what he does with Sleepwalker, but will this be the last year he acts like this? Let's hope not.
Last Week On BandSoup (9/9-9/16)
We have had a great week of uploads here on BandSoup! Here are a few of the bands that you must hear in case you missed them. Remember, you can always save songs that you like to your favorites by clicking the thumbs up (like) icon next to each song. Click on the artist name below to listen.
Lonely Drifter Karen (Indie Pop): Bolder, colder and brushed in chrome, Poles is a stylistically cohesive, colourful maelstrom of brooding but punchy interplanetary dream pop.
Vandaveer (Folk Rock): VANDAVEER is the song-singing, record-making, globetrotting project penned and put forth by alt-folk tunesmith Mark Charles Heidinger. Born in Ohio, raised in Kentucky, and currently camped out in the nation’s capital, Vandaveer offers up melodic Americana that is both haunting and easy, forlorn and welcoming, with stories as universal as the songs they inhabit.
Olfar (Indie Rock): Self-recorded in a remote barn in the Lake District, snow piled against the door and fires crackling within, Olfar's 'Harbour' is full of wrecked ships, sea creatures, war horses and lost souls. From title-track 'Harbour Hymn's soaring strings to the broken introversy of 'Haul Me In The River', the songs take a path through strange lands, stormy seas, tormented souls and broken hearts.
The Ex-Boyfriends (Punk Rock): Spastic and catchy punk rock from Dayton, Ohio's Rad Girlfriend Records.
Passenger Peru (Indie Rock): Playing an experimental sort of indie pop, the guitar tones are Sonic Youth-ish: dreamy landscapes with noisy scrapes of guitar, only to fall back into the peaceful tranquility moments later. Click their name to listen to their trippy single "Heavy Drugs".
Nathan Reich (Folk/Singer-Songwriter): In addition to being a technically brilliant guitarist, Nathan's lyrics put you in a specific place and mindset - it usually has something to do with heartbreak, late nights, and waking up the next day in some new city.
The Reigning Monarchs (Surf Rock): Combining surf rock, ska and other influences, this Los Angeles band makes awesome film ready tunes. You also might begin to skank on your surfboard.
Cosmonauts Day (Post Rock/Instrumental Rock): From the depths of Russian underground scene comes absolutely epic spaced out sludge outfit Cosmonauts Day! Intense guitar riffing, crushing to the ground and below drum stabbing, wicked bass, dreamy solos and an atmosphere of a cold space - their music is a mind journey to the places you've never known.
Dani Elliot (Soul): New York City based Dani Elliott brings a refreshing, soulful energy to the singer/songwriter forefront. Deriving her inspiration from the likes of Meshell N'degeocello, Jill Scott, and Corinne Bailey Rae, she weaves a musical tapestry that evokes sophisticated creativity with a maturity seldom seen in young artists today.
Not the Bees! (Punk Rock): Rough around the edges melodic DIY punk from North Jersey. For fans of Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Crimpshrine, etc.

Zero Excuse (Dubstep): Emerging from the San Francisco South Bay, Zero Excuse is a dubstep/electro house producer trying to make a name for himself.
Salvation Armband (Soul/Pop): "Salvation Armband is a soulful-jazz ensemble from Queens, led by vocalist Justina Soto and guitarist Danny Iuliano. So often in the sea of rock/punk/metal/hardcore bands that are so prevalent in the New York music scene - it’s such a refresher for me to hear something so mature, crafted and well-exectued coming from my peers. They create a musical atmosphere that breathes new life into an old sound." -Abeer Khalique, Latency Magazine
The Howl (Indie Rock): The Howl is a 4-piece indie-rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Their technical approach to rock music is fresh and energetic but still accessible to a diverse audience. They have spent the past 2 years writing and playing shows around the immediate chicago-land area and have recently completed their debut EP entitled "900 Feet Beneath" that was released this September.
Melissa James (Soul): Fusing her love of blues, folk-jazz, country and soul, Melissa’s songs take the listener on mini detours, which often open up to reveal the sometimes raw elements of her innermost thoughts. Combined with the velvety power of her delivery, it makes for a spine tingling experience.
