What is Bandwidth, What does it do?
Bandwidth
The measurement in bits per second (bps) of the data transferred between two machines in a given time is called bandwidth . It is expressed as bandwidth in English .
Bandwidth significantly affects the transmission capacity, quality and speed of an internet connection. The term bandwidth is used not only in the internet field, but also in other technological fields. As an example, bandwidth can be thought of as water flowing through a pipe. That is, bandwidth corresponds to the rate at which water (data) flows through a pipe (link) under various conditions.
In the early days of the Internet, bandwidth was first measured as “bps” (bits per second) . However, today’s internet connections have much higher bandwidths. For these high bandwidths, Mbps (megabits per second) , Gbps (gigabits per second) and Tbps (terabits per second) are used.

After the bandwidths expressed in terabits, petabyte , exabyte , zettabyte , yottabyte , which corresponds to the power of 10 , comes. However, these bandwidth units are not yet widely used today. Home and office internet bandwidths are still around Mbps or Gbps.
Bandwidth can be expressed in bits per second or in bytes per second . The amount of bytes per second is denoted by the capital letter “B” . For example, a bandwidth of 5 megabytes per second is expressed as 5 MB/s or 5 MBps.
How is bandwidth measured?
Bandwidth measurement can be done with auxiliary software or the network card itself.
Programs used to measure bandwidth measure the efficiency of data transfer between two hosts. One of these two hosts is the sender and the other is the receiver. Measurement programs, on the other hand, calculate the number of bytes transmitted between these two hosts and the transmission times of unidirectional packets.
More primitive methods can also be used to measure bandwidth. Transferring one or more files of known size and viewing how long the transfer took also gives an idea of bandwidth. The corresponding result can be found by dividing the sent file size by the transfer time. Most speed test tools on the internet use this method to calculate the bandwidth of the respective connection.
There is more than one way to define bandwidth.
Theoretical maximum: The highest transfer rate achieved when ideal conditions are met. The theoretical maximum speed is a value that emerges when a connection is tested under the best possible conditions.
Effective bandwidth: It is the most reliable measure of bandwidth that can be used for the bandwidth of a connection. Therefore, it is expected to be lower than the theoretical maximum bandwidth.
Efficiency: The average successful data transfer rate of an internet connection. As mentioned above, it is determined by dividing the transferred data size by the transfer time. It is measured in bytes (bytes) transferred per second and can be compared to its theoretical maximum to reveal the performance of the connection.
Good input: Calculated by the transfer time of the file size transferred ignoring the connection protocols.
Total transfer: All traffic in a certain time period (eg 1 month) is monitored and the bandwidth used is calculated.
In today’s internet networks, the bandwidth value changes from time to time, and a one-time bandwidth measurement is generally meaningless. The actual bandwidth value of an internet connection requires a number of metrics.
Why is bandwidth measured?
There are multiple reasons to measure bandwidth. First of all, the differences in the bandwidth between the units connected to a network or in their output to the Internet are prone to create a network problem in the related system.
End users, on the other hand, can use the bandwidth metric to find out if they paid for and received the promised value. Home users can get an idea of the bandwidth value by doing internet speed tests.
How to increase bandwidth?
Bandwidths can be purchased from the relevant internet service providers (ISP) . In addition, modem, cabling and other software conditions require control for connections that do not reach the bandwidth promised by the service provider.
It should be noted that the bandwidth of a wired internet connection is in most cases of higher quality and higher value than a wireless connection.
