i don’t have a problem with kato being flawed. all interesting characters are. skam is all about the journey of becoming a better person, so she fits right into that: she’s young, she lives in a privileged bubble, she’s ignorant, she has so much learning to do. when i was her age, i wasn’t that different. as a white person, it’s very important to admit that, at one point in my life, i too made racist comments without realizing, because we live in a racist society that normalizes racist behavior. i like to think that i’m much better now, but we, white people, constantly make mistakes (like ignoring that poc are saying because it’s uncomfortable!!!). my problem is not that kato is a character in wtfock, my problem is that she’s the main character of the season and that the main story is about the redemption of a white character that falls in love with a black character that will teach her that racism is wrong. black people don’t have to teach us anything, it’s our obligation to learn and they’re not accessories in the process. things would be much more interesting if moyo was the lead, if HE told us how it feels like to fall in love with a white girl that is racist. i watch the scenes and i desperately wanna know more about this thoughts, his feelings, his struggles... and that’s why it’s so frustrating to see the world through kato’s eyes. when we turn on the tv, we see hundreds of katos being the lead in hundreds of shows and wtfock/skam has so much potential to be different, to be better. the main should have been poc, period.
