Defenders #62 (Kraft/Buscema, Aug 1978). An unauthorized TV special invites every unaffiliated hero to join the Defenders. It’s immediately chaos but it’s fun to see the Falcon, the Marvels, Hercules, even the Torpedo…
Defenders #86 (Hannigan/Perlin, Aug 1980). Deadly chaos follows stolen Wakandan technology.
Defenders #80 (Hannigan/Trimpe, Feb 1980). I feel like Kyle Richmond should be so boring and irritating, but I kinda like him? He’s been funding and housing the Defenders, and here he singlehandedly saves Val, Patsy, and Hank from the Mandrill.
Defenders #79 (Hannigan/Trimpe, Jan 1980). Valkyrie finds herself leading her team against the Mandrill, while Strange leads the original Defenders into a different realm where men with giant bird wings for ears communicate by singing in dreams. The latter sounds cool conceptually but the execution isn’t as clear as the freaky Mandrill stuff.
Defenders #73 (Hannigan/Trimpe, July 1979). My favorite part of this book lately has been the letters page, where outraged fans rake poor Ed Hannigan over the coals for writing incomprehensible nonsense. And the apologetic replies are, “Don’t worry, we’ll write that Omega the Unknown conclusion we promised months ago.” Yeah, that’s really gonna clear things up, I’m sure!
