Barbara Chase-Riboud developed the concept for her series of Malcolm X sculptures while attending the Pan-African Cultural Festival in Algiers in 1969. She completed the final work in the series in 2017. Last day of #FriezeArtFair I went with my nephew Raekwon. We're in front of a piece by #BarbaraChaseRiboud who's work I just discovered. AMAZINGLY talented and accomplished artist, author, poet. She wrote the first novel about Sally Hemmings and a novel about Amistad that Spielberg plagiarized to make the movie Amistad. As women's history month draws to a close, I want to dedicate this #tbt to the great Black women artists who have paved the way for me and my peers throughout the diaspora. We salute visual and literary artist, Barbara Chase-Riboud (Born in Philadelphia, 1939). I had the pleasure of meeting her at Carrie Mae Weems amazing weekend of events #CarrieMaeWeemsLive at the @guggenheim in 2014.
