Located inside @AnacostiaArts Center, @MahoganyBooks is dedicated to meeting #literary needs of readers of #books written for, by, or abt people of the #African Diaspora. Started in 2007 by an enterprising husband & wife duo in the Washington #DC area, MahoganyBooks is the result of Derrick and Ramunda's love for #literature and their desire to see it #empower others as it has empowered them. With over 20 years of combined experience in the retail book industry, they've developed a new #bookstore model that capitalizes on today's technology while staying true to the independent community bookstore roots that define the core values of MahoganyBooks. MahoganyBooks grew from being exclusively an online bookstore to the go-to bookseller for community book events featuring #AfricanAmerican #authors in communities ranging from Manassas, #VA thru DC & Baltimore, #MD, reaching as far north as #Philadelphia, PA and Atlantic City, #NJ. Just recently MahoganyBooks was recognized by @emPowerMagazine as one of their 2014 #emPowerPlayers for our efforts to promote literature as well as the support we provide to many notable literary organizations of the Washington DC area like #GoonGirl! Book Club and the #HurstonWrightFoundation. However, for Derrick & Ramunda, they are most excited for the impact that their #family run business has had, not only, on local children through their give-back program, Books for the Block, but also the zeal for reading & #entrepreneurship their daughter Mahogany has developed through her exposure to the #MahoganyBooks enterprise. I made my 1st visit this afternoon to pick up #ColsonWhitehead's #PulitzerPrize winning The #UndergroundRailroad, & #BarbaraRansby's #EllaBaker &The Black Freedom Movement- recommended to me as the go to source on the #CivilRightsMovement’s foremost strategists & her playbook.
