What To the Slave is the 4th of July? Well...THIS year it's a rain on your janky military parade kinda day. This afternoon, I took a moment to chill on the porch at Cedar Hill out of the heavy rain. In 1852, the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Association invited abolitionist, activist and statesman Frederick Douglass to speak at their July Fourth #IndependenceDay Celebration in Rochester, N.Y. He e agreed to speak on July 5 instead & the speech he delivered was as relevant then as it is today. "Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political #freedom and of natural #justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout #gratitude for the #blessings resulting from your independence to us?" - #FrederickDouglass Have you ever read the entirety of this great speech? I asked Adrienne, the Soul Power Coach™ to work with me because my job is ending this year & I hoped to get an idea on what I want to do career wise. I was mentally #drained & in a #depressed mood but was keeping it all inside & not talking about it. I did not want to find myself without a #job, or #stuck in a job I didn’t want. After being in the construction industry for over 30 years, I wasn’t interested in doing that any longer. I needed to focus on finding my next #career & how to #transition into it. I wanted to feel #accomplished & #prepared but I wasn’t sure of what I really wanted to do. I received my Physical Personal Trainer certification almost 1 1/2 years ago & was second guessing myself, even though I had trained others part-time. I was feeling #overwhelmed. I was serious about reinventing myself but I needed help to stop #procrastinating; deal with my #fear & #confusion; learn how to stay #focused & avoid getting depressed. I believed that would be a challenge for Adrienne but it wasn’t. Adrienne has been very #supportive & gave me the #accountability that I need to #moveforward. Since I started using the Soul Power Coach™ tools, I was able to change my mood & clear my mind clutter. This program makes me think about myself when things around me are crazy & out of my control. July 24, 1917, the 654 members of the 24th Infantry, a unit of the famed #BuffaloSoldiers, were sent to Houston to guard #CampLogan construction for 7 weeks. They arrived only 3 weeks after white mobs indiscriminately beat & murdered men, women, & children in E. St. Louis. #Houston officials promised “in the spirit of #patriotism” there would be no trouble but whites worried if the soldiers commanded the same respect as white soldiers, Black residents would demand it too. On Aug 23, 1917 abt noon, 2 Houston police officers, broke up a corner craps game in San Felipe district. Searching for fleeing suspects, police entered local resident Sara Travers' home. An officer, known for #policebrutality against Blacks, struck Travers & dragged her outside in her nightgown. Private Alonzo Edwards approached offering to take custody of Sara Travers, but was pistol-whipped & arrested. That afternoon, Corporal Charles Baltimore, a battalion #military police, inquired abt his solider. He soon fled the Houston police station amid shots, before also being arrested. 156 soldiers of the 3rd Battalion marched towards the jail on that hot, rainy night to free Baltimore & (reportedly) kill every policeman they ran into. An armed mob of white citizens was rumored heading to the camp. 4 #soldiers & 16 white civilians were killed that night.  Houston was put under martial law & the battalion sent back to NM Aug 25th. In NM, 118 soldiers were arrested, charged w murder & mutiny, & returned to #TX. The resulting court martial staged in 3 parts was the largest in #USmilitary history. All 118 of the soldiers were represented by 1 lawyer. On Dec 11th, 13 of the enlisted men were hung at a hastily constructed gallows near a shallow creek on #CampTravis in #SanAntonio. Their bodies were unceremoniously buried in graves numbered 1 through 13. Another 63 soldiers (6 are pictured in these mug shots) were sentenced to life. The following September, 6 more soldiers were hung at the same Camp Travis site. “I refuse & will always refuse to accept a card to be used at the library to be constructed & operated at Alfred & Wythe Streets in lieu of [a] card to be used at the existing library on Queen Street for which I have made application."  - Samuel Wilber Tucker (1913-1990) 21 yrs before #GreensboroSitIn & yrs before #Virginia schools integrated, Alexandrian's led by #civilrights attorney #SamuelTucker, staged the 1st sit-in for #desegregation in America. At the time, Queen St. was the only library building in a city w a population of 33,000. It was built in 1937 using the tax dollars of both black & white residents, but had a “whites only” policy. Tucker was sent to local segregated schools & graduated from @Howard1867. Tucker studied law on his own at @LibraryCongress & passed Virginia’s bar exam at age 20. He was too young to be sworn in until the next year. Tucker tried for several yrs to establish #RacialEquity ACCESS & OUTCOMES for public resources. On March 17, 1939, he asked retired army sergeant George Wilson to apply for a library card. The librarian refused & Tucker sued for Wilson’s right to apply for a card. On Friday, August 21, 1939, a young #AfricanAmerican entered the library & asked to register for a #librarycard. When he was refused, he picked up a book, took a seat, & began to read. Minutes later, another well-groomed black man repeated these actions. Eventually William Evans, Otto L. Tucker (Samuel's brother), Edward Gaddis, Morris Murray & Clarence Strange occupied 5 tables. Each sat silently reading a book. The 5 men were charged w “disorderly conduct”. The judge avoided issuing a ruling. The 5 were never being declared guilty or not guilty, forced to serve time or pay any fine. The judge ruled if Wilson proved residency, the library would legally be required to issue him a card. To comply without integrating, @AlexandriaVAgov built a black library (now Alexandria’s #BlackHistory Museum) as a 1-room building w a dirt yard, donated & cast-off books.
