Barbie to her friends after BCBD:
Wow I love how there are no cishet characters in Barbie big city big dreams :]
I've been seeing so many people saying the new Barbie movie is queerbaiting and it's like,, so obvious y'all have no clue what queerbaiting is outside of ship discourse. Mattel isn't marketing, subtly or explicitly, BCBD as a queer movie. Mattel hasn't hinted that either Barbie could be queer (in the movie) or that they would end up in a relationship.
I'm not trying to defend Mattel here. They're still a big company and I would never put them above using such tactics. But BCDC is clearly another "Barbie has a close female friend and they focus on that friendship to empower friendships for little kids" kind of movie. Just like most Barbie movies. And this is doubled when you consider Brooklyn's relationship with Emily and their entire arc focusing on the loss of their friendship (and subsequent making up). The closest thing you can say this movie is doing is queercoding, which is almost always completely up to the viewer base, not the company, and vastly different from queerbaiting. Please stop throwing this word around just because two characters don't end up in a relationship.
Start your morning right with some Brooklyn/Malibu fluff!
I just woke up, got this idea, and wrote this short (~700 words) fic in one sitting, enjoy.

I'm also pretty fond of "See You at the Finish Line" from Big City, Big Dreams.
YES the new Barbie movie feels rushed and the story isn’t properly handled and I DONT CARE about that cause it was sapphic, cute and a bunch of good messages and slapping songs GOOD WRITING ISNT EVERYTHING
