barbie was a bit surprised at how stressful this FOAM PARTY was turning out to be. she’d just had to calm one of the foam machine operators after alex somehow managed to anger him. it didn’t take very long for barbie to decide this was not an event of hers she’d be openly advertising. she was incredibly lucky some of her friends were kind enough to attend a party they were all definitely too old for. it’s one of her friends she’s expecting when she hears a voice beside her, so she’s surprised to see a shirtless KAI. if you’d asked her, it wasn’t her fault her eyes first landed on his torso. it was a set-up! if anything, it was just a GLANCE. she made sure her eyes never lingered anywhere for too long. it’s less than a second that her eyes move from his chest to his gaze. she lets out a bit of a forced laugh before responding “it hasn’t been easy. however, it would be incredibly unprofessional to partake in the festivities. besides, foam parties are not my thing.” she’s rambling again. “is there something i can help you with?”

He could recognise that bright hair from across a room, like a beacon, and he left his drink at the bar and made his way through the room to reach her, tapping her turned shoulder gently. “Malaika,” the old Swahili endearment he used for her, on her, made the corners of Joshua’s mouth slope upwards, into the smile he was fighting in order to remain serious, “It feels like it’s been so long, Barbara. You look well.” 

He held out his arms for an embrace. “How have you been? How is your family? Ah. Too many questions. I’ll let you answer those first.”

She’d been hit in the shins with a couple hundred soccer balls over the course of her life. She was usually wearing shinguards, and usually prepared for the impact. This one didn’t hurt, exactly, just surprised her, because this stretch of beach was so quiet and so peaceful, and Yasmin crouched down to pick up the ball in front of her, looking around for its owner. There. A cherubic little blonde boy, staring right at her.

“Is this yours?” Yasmin approached him carefully and asked in English, though she wasn’t sure what language she should have used.
