Southampton. Bargate, North Side.
Southampton Toast Rack Tram No.2 (1916).
Southampton had a horse-drawn tram system from the mid-1800s, but by 1876 it was obvious that they were falling behind other major cities, and needed a modern transport system. Problems included the reluctance to electrify the tram system, the intrusiveness of tram lines, and the difficulty of getting through Bargate. To deal with these issues, the Southampton Tramways Company was formed.
The tram pictured above was cut in two in 1916, enabling it to pass through Bargate, and was known as a “toast rack”.

Goodbye Bargate
The demolition on bargate has started. I have been dreading this day for ages. I'm sad.
