On February 12, 1947 Monsieur Christian Dior presented his Haute Couture Spring collection in his salon at 30, Avenue Montagne in Paris. The collection’s press notes highlighted two main silhouettes: “Corolle” (ample swinging skirt, tiny waist, molded bodice) and “Eight” (neat and curvy, accentuated hipline and waist). With this collection Dior created a revolution in fashion: the New Look! Part of this fashion revolution was the Bar Jacket. It was made with 4 yarns of silk shantung, padded on the hips for a more feminine shape. The impact was doubled by the addiction of a voluminous Corolle skirt. The Bar jacket was an instant hit in terms of sales and was widely copied. Mr. Dior himself constantly updated this model and it was mainly presented in every new couture collection. Also all his successors, from Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Bohan, to Ferrè, Galliano, Raf Simons and lately Maria Grazia Chiuri have made their own version of iconic Bar Jacket; adapting it to times and giving to this piece an eternal life. 1.
