Evidence of beavers by the river
There were more, and larger, pawpaws further along. Some of the potential flowers got nipped by the frost, but that big one had so many I’m optimistic for future fruit! Tryna get a feel for the shape and the bark so I can get to know this species.
Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), showing bark, old seeds, and the difference between its nuts and those of the common local hickory (ok, but which species is that? I should know, but I don’t). The hike was mostly in a floodplain, and featured species typical of that environment.
