Waylaid to Lendal 2 (Riverside and Lendal Bridge)

Thursday began with a better viewing of St. Cuthbert’s. Amidst a mishmash of styles, the sunny morning highlighted a leaning tower, a war memorial in the form of an inscribed wooden cross and defaced gargoyles. Barker Tower, Lendal Bridge

The tower was constructed in the 14th century. It was positioned at the boundary of the medieval city centre and together with Lendal Tower on the opposite bank of the river Ouse was used to control river traffic entering the city.

Barker Tower was leased to generations of ferrymen who took passengers across the Ouse until the ferry was put out of business with the opening of Lendal bridge in 1863.

It has had many uses since and is currently the Perky Peacock Coffee Shop
